Would be Giant addition for Eli

caught in the end zone over Prince Amukamara with 27 seconds remaining to bring the Jets from behind and allow them to win in overtime.

Marshall had a horrible 2016 (59 catches, 788 yards, 3 TDs) after an outstanding 2015 (109 catches, 1,502 yards, 14 TDs). Even so, his numbers last season would have placed him third on the Giants in catches, second in yards, third in touchdowns. They don’t need him to be the No. 1 receiver. That’s OBJ. They need him to be a big target in the red zone.

Marshall’s $7.5 million salary made him a cap casualty even though he said after the season, in making a case to stay with the Jets, “My bills are paid. I’ll play for free.” The Giants should be able to get him at a reasonable price.

Marshall is hungry to make the playoffs for the first time in his career. The Giants were a wild-card team last year but need upgrades all over the offense to solve their weekly struggle to score 20 points. Marshall would give them the type of weapon they lacked last year.

“My only motive is to win ballgames,” he said. “I’m tired of going home right after the season. I’m tired of watching the playoffs on my couch. I’m tired of it. It’s been a frustrating career from that aspect and hopefully things change moving forward.”

Do we give him a do-over because the Jets stunk last year or should there be concern that he is on the downside of his career? Probably a bit of both. The Jets were a cesspool last year. The locker room was toxic with the darts that Marshall and Sheldon Richardson, one of the real knuckleheads in the league, were slinging at each other. Marshall has matured over the years, but sometimes he just can’t help himself with his mouth. He would be on his best behavior with the Giants, where the locker room culture is different.

I think Marshall would walk from Florham Park after cleaning out his locker all the way up to East Rutherford to play for the Giants. He has a huge post-career life waiting in television and staying in New York would be ideal for him.

One problem: Marshall has done “Inside The NFL” the last three years, which tapes on Tuesdays on the West Side of Manhattan. Tuesday has traditionally been the players’ day off around the league, but Giants rookie coach Ben McAdoo changed things up last year and gave the players Monday off and they worked on Tuesdays. McAdoo is not changing his schedule for Marshall and Showtime probably is not changing its schedule for him either.

If Marshall was able to work something out, the Giants would probably not object. They let Tiki Barber do a show on the YES Network for a couple of years, Manning does a regular spot on WFAN and in the past Antrel Rolle and Victor Cruz have also done spots on the FAN.

Marshall will be incredibly motivated to write a new ending to his career. He will be 33 years old on March 23 and I think he’s got one more very productive season left in him. Despite some of the nonsense that went on with the Jets last year, I think Marshall would be a good mentor for Beckham.

Meanwhile, if you’re a Jets fan you have to be pretty excited about the prospects for this 3-13 season coming up. In the last week, Mike Maccagnan has dumped Darrelle Revis, Nick Mangold, Marshall and others and cleared about $45 million in cap room. He won the executive of the year award in 2015 after he took over a 4-12 team and the Jets went 10-6 and almost made the playoffs. an he give back that award? Maccagnan won the honor due in part to signing Revis and trading nextto-nothing for Marshall and Fitzpatrick, who is also an ex-Jet. None of these moves were unexpected, but it sure seems like the Jets are tanking and would prefer to fast forward to the 2018 draft and forget even playing this season.

Maccagnan tried a competitive rebuild when he got here in 2015 and it blew up on him. Now he’s tearing the team apart and starting over in his third year. That should not be allowed. You get to start over in the first year, not the third year.

Unfortunately for the Jets, Maccagnan seems as lost in the front office as Todd Bowles does on the sidelines.
