Recycling unfounded charges

-

Brooklyn: Re the Daily News editorials regarding certain labor issues at our Brooklyn recycling facility (March 2 and 4): We at Sims Municipal Recycling agree there is no Democratic or Republican way to clean the streets, and I am sure The News would agree there is nothing more democratic than a vote. Providing our employees the opportunity to vote on whether to unionize was the only thing we asked for.

We never engaged in the activities we were accused of. Sadly, it is often the case in organizing efforts that unfounded charges are made as a negotiating tactic. We are confident the investigations of the National Labor Relations Board will find we did nothing wrong. Sims Municipal Recycling has never had a strike at any of our facilities. We’ve participated in negotiations at our union locations in the metropolitan area, and have always been successful in reaching mutually acceptable agreements. We value our union relationships and look forward to working together at our Brooklyn site, and to maintaining a workplace that adheres to Sims’ core values of safety, integrity, and respect.

The true Trump returns

Brooklyn: If anyone thinks that Donald Trump’s address to Congress was the beginning of him acting like a “normal” President, they would be sadly mistaken. His latest episode to change the subject from connections to Russia to accusing President Obama of ordering the wiretapping of his phones is not only pathetic, but vintage Trump. He is what he is and cannot change the nature of his paranoid, unhinged behavior. He has shamelessly attacked Obama’s citizenship and now attacks him with unsubstantiated claims of illegal behavior. Trump represents a grave danger to the American republic with his denigrating and delegitimizing comments about our intelligence community, judiciary, press, integrity of elections, military, etc. Any true American, whether Republican or Democrat, should recognize this man for what he is: a dangerous threat to the institutions, values and stability of a great country.

Who’s ‘we’?

Staten Island: Re Voicer Elaine Kaiser’s assertion that “We the people have spoken and we have elected Mr. Trump to be our President”: Actually, we the people voted for Hillary Clinton to be our President by about 3 million votes. The Electoral College voted in trump (lower case intended), thereby voting against the Founding Fathers’ purpose for their existence, which was to ensure that an incompetent person not be given the reins of our great country. They were never intended to be a rubber stamp on the states they represent. Shawny Carroll

Chickens, roost

Barnegat, N.J.: To Voicer Dee Klein: So you are saddened that talk show hosts bash Herr Trump? Seriously? You, as a deplorable, had no such sadness when Trump insulted, embarrassed, denigrated and criticized during his selection as President. The Dixie Chicks were blackballed because they came from a redneck, Republican state. The rest of us, over 3 million more than voted for Trump, will never accept him as our President. He is a pathological liar and delusional egotist with the vocabulary of a 12-year-old, a nasty, ugly bully. I am sure once all the truths come out about his tax returns, his shady business dealings and the Vladimir Putin bromance, even the deplorables will not be able to make excuses for him anymore. So you can feel saddened for him. I say he made himself the butt of all jokes. Congratulations to “SNL” and all the comedians and hosts who get it. Lynda Spurdis Bronx: To Voicers Donna Spoto and John Scott: Where have you been? Did you ever hear your President say that if he stood outside Trump Tower and shot a gun at people, he would get away with it? Did you ever hear him say to the Russians on TV that they should get Hillary Clinton’s emails? Did you ever hear him tell his followers: “Lock her up”? Wake up. Did he tell you his clan of billionaires was going to be his staff? Tell your President to send his children to war when they start attacking our country. Where are you going to hide? The only one standing up to Trump is our wonderful, blessed police commissioner. Candy Rose Briarwood: Voicer Lenora Shoulders is right. Donald Trump suffers a severe political disease. Diagnosis: Foot-in-mouth-itis. Take an aspirin and call me in four years. Maurice Varela

Au revoir

Brooklyn: The Statue of Liberty is an undocumented immigrant. Is President Trump deporting her back to France? Joseph Fishbane

Ready for prime viewing

Bronx: I started watching “Saturday Night Live” again because of Alec Baldwin and Melissa McCarthy. I love McCarthy’s portrayal of Donald Trump spokesperson Sean Spicer. I can’t stop laughing! As for Baldwin, he has Trump down pat. I also love the Grim Reaper as Steve Bannon and the comedian who impersonates Vladimir Putin with no shirt on. As long as Trump is in the White House, I will keep watching “SNL.” Doris Festante

Killer air

Brooklyn: Donald Trump said he is bringing back the coal industry. He should read an article from the January-February issue of Discover magazine. Coal use has peaked in China, the world’s largest polluter, and is falling off earlier than expected, according to a Nature Geoscience analysis. That is welcome news, as another recently published study showed that coal pollution prematurely killed 366,000 Chinese in 2013.

Milking the issue

Manhattan: President Trump was very smart to use his slogan in the crucial Electoral College state of Wisconsin, a significant cheese producer: Make America grate again. L.E. Shapiro

Workers of America, unite

Brooklyn: Unions across the country are telling Americans about so-called right-to-work and how they should not be “forced” to join a union. Think about what they are doing. They, women especially, are making themselves vulnerable to their bosses. For men, it’s “my way or the highway.” Right-to-work laws can make you a day laborer. You will not have a say at work. I was a union worker, retired 41 years this week. Thanks to unions.

On the other Rand

Manhattan: I have mixed feelings about the author Ayn Rand. I agree with her that the use of logic and reason is very important, but I am not an atheist and am not at all selfish. Unfortunately, Rand had an abortion and committed adultery. I believe in chivalry and I like the values of Superman, who always fought for what is right, good and true. The smartest move I ever made was joining the John Birch Society. No retreat! No surrender! We are up against tremendous evils in America. The worst evils, in my humble opinion, are gay marriage and abortion. May God save us all.

What the heck, Chuck?

Oakland Gardens: What a joke! We tried to call Sen. Chuck Schumer’s office in January and couldn’t get through. Now he claims the Washington switchboard experienced an avalanche of calls asking him and his fellow Democrats to oppose the nomination of Betsy DeVos for secretary of education. How convenient. Just in time for the teachers union and its members to flood Washington with calls to reject DeVos and our children’s chance for a quality education.

Hers and hours

Pearl River, N.Y.: Re “OT champ almost tripled $68G pay in tech office” (Feb 14): If she works a normal 40-hour week plus her overtime hours, she would have to work 21 hours every day in a five-day work week. Or with a six-day work week, it would still be 18 hours every day last year. Something is amiss with a quarter-million-dollar salary.

Twin stars

Manhattan: What’s up with twins? Beyoncé, George Clooney — who cares? Why are we so obsessed with celebrities? Thousands of moms around the world are carrying twins.

Yvonne Crequé

Rusty hail

Staten Island: With all the numbers retired by the Mets, Rusty Staub’s number should be retired, too, because he has done so much for the widows and children of the NYPD and FDNY — more than any professional sports player.
