Bogut breaks leg in Cavalier debut

-

Andrew Bogut didn’t make it through one minute of his debut with the Cavaliers.

The team’s new center broke his left leg in the second quarter Monday and had to be assisted off the floor and to Cleveland’s locker room. The 7-footer could not put any weight on his leg as he was helped by new teammates James Jones and Tristan Thompson, who moments earlier had cheered along with fans in Quicken Loans Arena when Bogut checked in for the first time. The Cavs said initial X-rays revealed a fractured left tibia. Bogut is at the Cleveland Clinic undergoing further tests.

The 32-year-old sustained the injury at the 11:38 mark of the second quarter, just moments after taking the floor for the first time in his No. 6 jersey. Bogut only signed with Cleveland last week, turning down bigger contracts and more playing time to help the Cavs defend their NBA title.

RAPINOE TO STAND

Megan Rapinoe says she will respect a new U.S. Soccer Federation policy that says national team players “shall stand respectfully” during national anthems.

The policy was approved last month but came to light Saturday before the U.S. women’s national team lost to England in a SheBelieves Cup match. A Fox Soccer analyst posted an image of the rule on Twitter.

The policy comes after Rapinoe knelt during the anthem at a pair of national team matches last year. The midfielder has said she wanted to express solidarity with former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who knelt last season in an attempt to bring attention to racial inequality.

l For the first time since 19 of its players were killed in a fatal plane crash, the Chapecoense soccer team took an international charter flight. In November, the plane carrying Chapecoense to its match in Colombia crashed into the Andes, killing 71 of the 77 passengers on board, including 23 players and club personnel. The plane ran out of fuel, leading to the crash in the mountains.
