Teemer takes Gloves bout

- BY LAMAR CLARK

Fresh off a fourth round knockout of Jorge Cota on the undercard of the Keith Thurman-Danny Garcia title fight last Saturday at Barclays Center, Erickson Lubin showed his support for Golden Gloves competitors Thursday night.

“This is the tournament where the champions are made,” Lubin said. “All the greats from the past and present came through the Golden Gloves.

“For me to be here and support the amateurs, I hope is more motivation for these boxers to go out there and give it their all.”

Lubin was just one of the spectators on hand at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center in Queens supporting the 90th annual Daily News Golden Gloves and his friend Bruce Carrington (Atlas Cops N Kids), who fought on the card and defeated Harley Mederos (Gym X BC), 4-1, in a 132 lb. open bout.

The Empire Casino Punch of the Night came in the opening bout, a straight lead right thrown by Quentin Gonzalez (Unattached) in the second round that wobbled Matthew Mahoney (Unattached) in their 123 lb. bout. Mahoney received two standing 8 counts in that round. He was later stopped at 22 seconds of the third.

The Colony Pest Bout of the Night went to Alan Teemer (Freeport PAL) and Cal Ashby (Pac Plex BC) in their 123 lb. novice match up.

Teemer took the hard-fought 5-0 victory.

In the first round, Cal Ashby, a compacted boxer with fast hands, came out like a bullet, darting inside and landing some clean hooks. Teemer braved the barrage and stayed patient, sticking to his game, the jab.

“I felt I had perfect timing with my jab,” Teemer said. “I wish I used it more.”

In the second round, Ashby continued to apply pressure but Teemer was able to catch him with a couple of check hooks that gave Ashby second thoughts about rushing in.

In the third round, Teemer saw the openings clearer and landed some big uppercuts as Ashby continued to come forward. Midway through the round, Ashby was able to trap Teemer against the ropes and unleash a flurry of body shots, but Teemer closed the round landing two clean right hooks that surely won it for him.

“He threw fast combinations,” 19-yearold Teemer said. “If he would have done that more, it would have been a much closer fight.”

The P.C. Richard Boxer of the Night went to Dashaun Johns (John’s Gym), who unanimously defeated Elvis Gonzalez (Worldwide BC) in their 141 open bout.

“I had to make a few adjustments,” Johns said. “I see he wanted to brawl, so I boxed him more.”

Johns looked good, giving Gonzalez all types of angles, setting up clean punches behind the jab with very good foot work.

The next Golden Gloves event takes place tonight at Holy Cross High School in Queens (7:30 p.m.).
