Isles beat Pitt in SO; Nets fall to Wiz, Wall

John Tavares and Anthony Beauvillie­r scored in the shootout to lead the New York Islanders over the host Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 on Friday night.

Beauvillie­r opened the shootout with a goal, and Tavares snapped a wrist shot past Marc-Andre Fleury in the next round. Sidney Crosby scored in the shootout for Pittsburgh, but Jaroslav Halak, making his first start since Dec. 29, stopped Phil Kessel and Nick Bonino.

John Wall scored 22 points despite dealing with migraine headache symptoms earlier in the day, Bradley Beal added 19 points and the Washington Wizards cruised past the visiting Brooklyn Nets 129-108. Justin Hamilton scored 20 points off the bench to lead the Nets a day after Brooklyn beat Phoenix 126-98 for its second-largest win of the season.

l Philadelph­ia 76ers center Joel Embiid had minor surgery on his left knee to repair a torn meniscus. Embiid should be able to transition to full weight-bearing workouts in about two weeks.

EX-NINER DEAD AT 88

Former San Francisco 49ers lineman Clay Matthews Sr., who was the patriarch of a famous football family, has died. He was 88. The 49ers said Matthews had been dealing with a long illness.

His impact on the NFL is still felt today. His two oldest sons, Bruce and Clay Jr., each spent 19 seasons in the league. Five of Matthews’ grandsons have also played in the NFL, including Green Bay linebacker Clay Matthews III and Atlanta offensive lineman Jake Matthews.

U.S. BLANKS HONDURAS

Bruce Arena’s return as the U.S. coach reignited American confidence, and his players responded with an emphatic rebound in World Cup qualifying. Clint Dempsey returned from an irregular heartbeat to score his second internatio­nal hat trick, 18-year-old phenom Christian Pulisic had one goal and set up three others, and the U.S. routed Honduras 6-0 to get right back in contention for an eighth straight World Cup berth.

HOCKEY FILL-INS SAY NAY

Two players told The Associated Press they had declined an inquiry from USA Hockey to replace members of the women’s national team at the upcoming world championsh­ips.
