Dog-sitter sues Bacharach over bitten fingers

- BY NICOLE BITETTE

WHAT THE world needs now — is a lawsuit against composer Burt Bacharach for apparently having a finger-chomping dog.

The music legend’s Portuguese water dog, Alfie, badly bit two of a dog-sitter’s fingers, TMZ reported. The gossip site said sitter Joel Gayner had to undergo a harrowing skin graft from his groin to repair his hand.

Now Gayner is suing Bacharach (right) over the incident — which he says occurred right after he saved the life of the dog (far right) because he was choking on a plastic bone. Gayner said he awoke one morning to find Alfie with his eyes rolled back. The dog was gasping for air and urinating.

The sitter leaped into action, pressing the dog’s chest while massaging his esophagus until the broken pieces of bone came out. Once he was sure the pooch was OK, Gayner, 73, tried to pet the pup — but Alfie turned and mauled his hand, leaving his middle fingers mangled.

Gayner claims he needed to have one finger surgically reattached. His ring finger was also badly damaged and doctors used a skin graft to replace the missing chunks of flesh, according to the celebrity gossip website.

Gayner told the site he now suffers from nerve damage and has no feeling in his fingers.

The dog-sitter is suing Bacharach for his medical expenses and unspecified damages.

Queens native Bacharach, 88, is a six-time Grammy Award winner and three-time Academy Award winner.

He composed numerous popular songs from the 1950s to the 1980s, including hits like and “What the World Needs Now Is Love,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” “What’s New Pussycat,” “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” “That’s What Friends are For” and — of course — “Alfie.” The composer could not be reached for comment.
