Todd must learn from Jet rival

Todd Bowles doesn’t have to kiss Bill Belichick’s rings, hoodie or derriere, but he’d be wise to adopt a simple strategy that has helped the Patriots head honcho establish a blueprint for success. Bowles’ about-face admission Tuesday at the annual league meetings that he’ll assume a greater role in the Jets offense this season was an important and necessary step in his evolution as a head coach. Now it’s time to lift from the game’s greatest coach.

The first order of business should be to mimic Belichick’s in-season Monday meetings with quarterbac­ks for an initial briefing on the upcoming opponent.

On a day when the rest of the teams in the NFL are preoccupie­d with making film correction­s from the past weekend’s games, Belichick typically gets a head start on the upcoming opponent by sharing his observatio­ns of the opposing defensive backs that Tom Brady and his backups will have to prepare for over the next several days. It’s a simple strategy that sets the tone for the rest of the week.

Bowles spent eight seasons as an NFL safety. If there’s any position he fully understand­s, it’s defensive back. He could provide invaluable insight to his quarterbac­ks, young and old, at the beginning of the week. An initial scouting report to his signal callers would make a world of difference.

Bowles admitted Tuesday that he’ll be much more engaged with his offense than he was in his first two seasons.

“I’ll be probably heavily more involved than I’ve been since I’ve been here,” Bowles said at the annual league meetings in Phoenix. “It’s just the way I feel as a coach, and have evolved to, and where I need to be. To understand everything from that (offensive) standpoint, I need to be heavily involved.”
