Pols seek gov school boo$t

- Ben Chapman

INFLUENTIAL city officials — including Councilman Danny Dromm and Public Advocate Letitia James — have signed on to a letter demanding Gov. Cuomo better fund needy public schools.

Cuomo’s proposed state budget already sets aside $10.1 billion for city schools, but the local leaders who signed the letter want the governor to pony up another $1.9 billion to create more fair opportunities for city students.

They say it’s the right thing for the governor to do in the spending plan due Saturday.

“For over a decade, our children have been denied the funding that would level resources among New York City public schools and our wealthy suburban neighbors,” the letter dated Tuesday states.

“Our children deserve the best education we can give them.”

The elected officials who signed the letter believe Cuomo owes the city the increased funding under the terms of a 2006 ruling on a school-funding lawsuit.

“Now is the time for Albany to step up to the plate and produce,” said Dromm (D-Queens), the council’s education chairman.

Cuomo administration officials say the state has already fulfilled its funding requirements for needy schools many times over. Spokeswoman Dani Lever said the governor’s formula directs more money to high-needs districts than ever.
