Academy grad latest in long line to join NYPD

- BY ROCCO PARASCANDOLA

THEY’RE THE real Blue Bloods.

Among the Police Academy graduates Thursday was Officer Daniel Huber, the latest in a long line of Hubers to wear NYPD blue.

His mother, Sally, is also a retired officer, as are two aunts, Patricia and Karen, and his now deceased grandfather, Andy Sr.

Each day before heading to the Police Academy, Huber found inspiration in a 1990 family photo that appeared in the Daily News.

Daniel, then an infant, rested comfortably in his cop dad’s arms while other family members — including his grandfather, a retired cop, and his aunt, another cop.

“I first saw the picture about a year ago,” he said. “I have it on top of my dresser. I look at it every day before I go to work. I want to make my family proud. I want to make the City of New York proud, and I want to make the NYPD proud.”

Huber, 26, of Rockland County, studied criminal justice in college, but didn’t decide until recently to join the family business. He will wear shield 16305, worn by his grandfather, father and Aunt Karen before him.

His dad Andy, a retired detective who met Daniel’s mom, Sally Huber, while both were rookie officers, is over the moon.

“I was hoping he would want to do it,” he said of Daniel. “And I was so happy when he decided to do it. I’m just beside myself proud of him.”

Huber’s Aunt Patricia worked for the NYPD for eight years, then served eight more years as an officer in Coral Gables, Fla.

Daniel Huber, who is expected to be assigned to the 52nd Precinct in the Bronx, says what stands out the most is the importance of treating people with respect.

“One of the greatest pieces of advice I got was to take care of everyone as if they were your family,” he said, “You take care of your family. You’re there for your family. You should treat everyone you meet on the streets as if they were your family.”

Huber was among 646 officers who graduated during a ceremony at Madison Square Garden on Thursday.

The class included 140 grads born outside the United States, including Lana Blanco, from Iraq, and the valedictorian, Iryna Tinofeeva, from Belarus. There was also a former Philadelphia cop and Shaun Enright, the great, great, great grandson of Richard Enright, who was NYPD commissioner from 1918 to 1925.
