Deserving of all the help they get
QI am a second-generation Irish-American, with no immigration concerns whatever, but I truly enjoy reading your column. With the extreme response by the Trump administration to our immigrant population, I am grateful that your sound, calm, and plain-spoken legal advice is available for everyone to read. Cathy Jones, New York I don’t normally publish fan letters, but I’m making an exception because these are exceptional times. Thank you for your kind words.
I am fond of the phrase “immigrants are us.” It reminds us of our immigrant heritage and that throughout America immigrants are our neighbors, our friends, our co-workers. Immigrants legal and undocumented are facing a level of attack not seen in half a century. They need all the help and support they can get. Those wanting to join the struggle can go to: New York Immigration Coalition at NYIC.org, Fair Immigration Reform Movement at FairImmigration.org and Reform Immigration for America at ReformImmigrationForAmerica. org.
QI am here on F-1 international student status. Once I marry my U.S. citizen fiancé, what documentation must we file with all the immigration forms so I can adjust my status to permanent resident and get my green card? Name withheld, Lake Charles, La. Include your birth certificate; your marriage certificate and proof of lawful entry, such as a copy of the entry stamp in your passport. Include also proof that your husband is a U.S. citizen, his birth certificate if he was born here, or a U.S. passport or citizenship certificate. If you or your husband have prior marriages, you’ll need a divorce judgment or death certificate for prior spouses.
For proof that yours is a real marriage, you can bring that documentation with you to your interview. The law does not require any particular type of evidence, but examples of evidence to prove you have a life together are bills sent to the same address, proof of joint bank and/or credit card accounts, photos of the two of you traveling out of town or with each other’s relatives.
