Gorsuch a great judge, you are

-

Manhattan: I completely agree with the Daily News’ well-reasoned editorial urging Senate Democrats to confirm Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court (“Make him Justice Gorsuch,” March 26). Gorsuch is eminently qualified, as were nominees Robert Bork and Merrick Garland before him. The Democrats started the confirmation wars when they demonized Bork. The Republicans paid them back when they refused to even consider Garland. And yes, the Republicans deserve retribution for that. But the country has had enough of this ugly spectacle and the Senate acting like clowns.

Senators from both parties should consider the public good over their party loyalties and accept that every President deserves to have his nominees fairly considered. The Senate’s constitutional duty is to advise and consent to qualified candidates, not to impede them.

I hope that Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand will lead by example and cross the aisle to vote aye. It’s the right thing to do. Margot Shields

Block this nomination

Brooklyn: I am in full support of Sen. Chuck Schumer’s decision to filibuster the nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. This seat was stolen from President Barack Obama, who had nominated someone who was respected by senators from both sides of the aisle and should have been a shoo-in. Instead, the Republican senators shut it down by not even scheduling a hearing for almost a full year. Nowhere in the Constitution does it say that nominees should not get a hearing if a vacancy on the Supreme Court occurs during a presidential campaign year. We now have a President whose campaign is under federal investigation for possible collusion with the Russians in relation to the 2016 presidential election. Why should President Trump have the right to nominate a Supreme Court justice for a lifetime appointment when he himself is under investigation? Is that unfair to Gorsuch? My answer to that is it is no more unfair than it was to Judge Merrick Garland. At least he won’t have to sit around for a year waiting for a hearing. This seat should be held vacant until Trump has been cleared of any wrongdoing in connection to his election. How long that takes is entirely up to the Republican-controlled Congress. They should appoint an independent commission immediately and get on with it. The sooner we have that answer, the better for our country. Nancy Costa

Good for the goose

Bronx: Judge Gorsuch should be given the same consideration that Judge Garland was given — none.

Deny Trump’s pick

Staten Island: Not only did the GOP steal this seat from President Obama, their leader, President Trump, is under a cloud of investigations, including possible ties to Russia and Putin. This incompetent fool and hatemonger should not be allowed to appoint anyone until the cloud above his combover is gone! Gary Perl

Never Neil

Manhattan: I strongly disagree with The News in its statement that Democrats should vote for this man. The Republicans took this matter to the extreme when they refused an up-or-down vote on Judge Merrick Garland. Neil Gorsuch could be on the court for 40 years and the American people cannot afford his thinking on how the Constitution should be interpreted. Bob Culver

Breslin the best

Manhattan: To Voicer Gene McGovern: Without an assist from someone working deep undercover, the following coup would not have been possible. Contributing a piece on the Son of Sam case for New York magazine on the occasion of its 25th anniversary in 1993, Jimmy Breslin made the bold assertion, never revealed in print before or since, that I was not only the prime suspect but enjoyed being one, immensely. That makes Breslin, never a stickler for rules but disciplined enough to wait a decent interval to protect a source — and observe the privacy rights of a ne’er-do-well — not only a terrific investigative reporter but one of the loveliest people to have ever graced the streets of Forest Hills, Queens.

Praise the Cupp

Yonkers: Freaks me the hell out to say this, but I agree with many of the ideas of S.E. Cupp (“Tax reform for the next generation,” column, March 29). I’m a Gen Xer but have a millennial daughter. I also rent. I think the tax code should give relief to millennials and renters. It should also give relief to the working poor and to the middle class. I just don’t understand why the GOP, whenever they talk about tax reform, focus is less on helping the most wealthy among us. Their argument is helping “job creators” when there isn’t any real evidence that happens. Charlie Monsanto Whitestone: The Daily News says that Brownsville, Brooklyn, is the worst area in New York (“Worst neighborhoods for kids in New York,” March 27). However, I live in Queens and I have the same problem. As do many other areas in the city. We have no access to fresh food, day care or subways. And I don’t see how things are going to change. True, some of the people in Brownsville may be poor, but so are some of the people in Whitestone. The only way to get around Whitestone is by car, or cab if you don’t have one. If you can afford a cab. Otherwise you depend on the kindness of neighbors. Bonnie Goldfarb

Throne for a loss

Bronx: To Voicer Robert Pozzi: The Oval Office does not have a throne and Donald Trump is not a king or an emperor. He is, however, a tyrant. Melissa Hamilton

Royal pains

Norwalk, Conn.: Dear Voicer Robert Pozzi: Your letter says you’re from New Jersey, but I’m sure that is a mistake and you’re from some foreign country that has a king — who sits on a throne. We have a republic, no throne, no king. You might want to share this distinction with Trump — he doesn’t seem to understand it, either. Good luck with your move to a country with a monarchy!

Stefanie Pont

Man without a party

Walden, N.Y.: Voicer Robert Pozzi states that some Republicans oppose Trump no matter what he does. Although the letter was an attempt at humor, there is a thread of truth. He is an outsider: No one wants him to succeed. His election was a threat to the status quo. It doesn’t matter what baggage he has, he has an extremely uphill battle to accomplish anything. The Koch brothers will only let him pass things that will advance their agenda. Thomas Ellis

Questions for Democrats

Oceanside, L.I.: The only good thing about all these investigations called for by the out-of-power, out-of- ideas Democrats is that their hatred and jealousy of anything the Republicans may accomplish without them, keeps them from further tearing this country apart and down with their mind-numbing legislation. I am tired of hearing whether Republican voters are happy with their representatives and I wonder, is this what Democrat voters believe is meaningful representation for the long-term good of the American people? Steve Feuer

True Pats fan

Mattapoisett, Mass.: Please stop this insanity continuing to infer that Tom Brady is in “fantasyland” when he fully intends to continue playing for the New England J. Scott Applewhite/AP Patriots for several years to come (“Tom Brady is officially delusional for thinking he can play for six or seven more years,” column, March 28). He is and will continue to be a stellar player and shows that he is far superior than any other player in the NFL. He is strong and talented, and outranks any New York players as well as the players in the rest of the league. Maybe you should see the light and quit this foolishness.

Union horsing around

Woodside: Voicer Craig Sheldon is spouting alternative facts when he says that the City Council did not ban horse-drawn carriages because they listened to the voice of the people. No, they actually listened to the unions that threatened to pull support in their next elections — the very same unions that lied about the carriage drivers having good union jobs. Unions are on a downward cycle, losing support in New York City and the nation. This was a ploy to make it look like they had some muscle. Council members received donations from carriage drivers to do their bidding, just as Sheldon accused Wendy Neu of doing with the mayor. Marie Richardson

Thanks to the Finest

Brooklyn: There are not enough kudos and love to give to our NYPD. What they have to do and put up with on a daily basis! I know no one is perfect, but our NYPD comes so close. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. You’re the best. Diane Hunt
