Hail Cesar! Phils walk off on Nats

-

PHILADELPHIA — Cesar Hernandez hit an RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning to give the Philadelphia Phillies a 4-3 victory over the Washington Nationals on Sunday.

Pinch-hitter Ryan Zimmerman delivered a tying, three-run homer with two outs in the top of the ninth off closer Jeanmar Gomez, but the Phillies immediately answered to take two of three from the defending NL East champions.

Pinch-hitter Daniel Nava walked to start the bottom of the ninth against Koda Glover (0-1). Nava advanced to third when Freddy Galvis singled to right with one out. After Brock Stassi popped out, Hernandez slashed an opposite-field single to left.

PIRATES 6, BRAVES 5 (10): Starling Marte hit a two-run homer off Jose Ramirez in the 10th inning, lifting host Pittsburgh to a victory over Atlanta.

Atlanta had taken the lead in the top of the inning on an RBI groundout by Tyler Flowers, but Pittsburgh wasted little time getting to Ramirez (0-1).

REDS 8, CARDINALS 0: Scott Feldman allowed four hits and struck out six in six innings, and Cincinnati beat St. Louis to take two of three from the Cardinals.

Adam Duvall had three hits, including a home run, and two RBI for the Reds, who have won just five of their last 40 series at Busch Stadium.

RUBBER DUCK!: There was a rubber on the field at Miller Park Sunday afternoon, but it wasn’t the one on the mound that delayed the Brewers’ game against the Cubs.

An inflated condom sailed above the Milwaukee diamond until it was unceremoniously smashed by umpire Jeff Nelson.

Preventing contraception from playing the field isn’t part of an umpire’s job description, but Nelson took all the credit he could by tipping his cap to the crowd.

RED SOX 7, TIGERS 5: Sandy Leon broke an eighth-inning tie with a two-run single, part of a four-run rally that lifted Boston to a victory over host Detroit. The Red Sox rallied four times from one-run deficits, finally taking the lead against the Detroit bullpen.

RAYS 7, BLUE JAYS 2: Steven Souza Jr. hit a three-run homer and was involved in a scrum after a slide during Tampa Bay’s victory over Toronto in St. Petersburg.

Corey Dickerson and Jesus Sucre also homered, and Jake Odorizzi (1-1) went six effective innings for the Rays, who took three of four from Toronto at Tropicana Field. Tampa Bay has won 23 of its last 30 home series against the Blue Jays, going 61-33 during that stretch.

TWINS 4, WHITE SOX 1: Miguel Sano and Jorge Polanco homered to back Ervin Santana’s six scoreless innings as Minnesota beat host Chicago. Santana (2-0) held the White Sox to two singles and lowered his ERA to 0.69. Minnesota, which finished with the worst record in the majors last season, has the top mark in the American League at 5-1 after taking two of three from Chicago.

DIAMONDBACKS 3, INDIANS 2: Patrick Corbin threw six scoreless innings, Chris Owings homered and had three hits and Arizona completed a three-game sweep of visiting Cleveland.

GIANTS 5, PADRES 3: Hunter Pence and Buster Posey hit consecutive homers, and Johnny Cueto struck out seven in seven strong innings for struggling San Francisco, which beat host San Diego to avoid a threegame sweep.

DODGERS 10, ROCKIES 6: Corey Seager hit a two-run homer and L.A. scored seven runs with two outs, avoiding a sweep by beating Colorado on a blustery Denver day.

ANGELS 10, MARINERS 9: Albert Pujols hit his 592nd career homer and a tying two-run single in the ninth inning before Cliff Pennington’s drive to the wall capped the Angels’ rally from a six-run deficit for a victory over Seattle in Anaheim.
