Net likes O’Neill’s jab at Don
NYPD COMMISSIONER James O’Neill earned social media kudos Saturday for throwing some shade at President Trump’s antiimmigrant policies.
O’Neill thanked the White House for praising the daughter of an NYPD sergeant who’s following in her father’s footsteps — while letting Trump know that the NYPD is one of the most diverse police forces in the country.
A day earlier, Trump’s official Twitter account offered some words of encouragement for Brittney Roy, a 22-year-old cadet who recently joined New York’s Finest.
“Thank you & congratulations!” @POTUS wrote from the account run by Trump’s longtime social media director Dan Scavino Jr.
Roy’s dad, Sgt. Timothy Roy, was last seen on 9/11 at the World Trade Center’s South Tower before it collapsed.
“Thx for tweeting. Her dad’s a hero & she’ll do great things w/ #NYPD. Btw her 473 fellow recruits hail from 43 countries, speak 27 languages” O’Neill wrote on Saturday.
The burn earned its own praise from a wide range of people on Twitter.
“POW!!! Great response Commissioner!!!” wrote Rev. Marcos Miranda, the president of New York State Chaplain Task Force.
“And she’ll be joining a police force that includes more than 900 Muslim officers,” wrote Marisa Elana James.
Roy is one of 474 new cadets who were sworn in on Thursday.
O’Neill has needled the President before, saying in February that NYPD cops will not enforce administrative warrants issued by federal immigration officials as a result of the expansive deportation policies.
He has also criticized the White House’s budget proposals, saying that proposed cuts would cripple the NYPD’s ability to protect the nation’s No. 1 terror target by slashing $190 million in Homeland Security funding for the Big Apple.
“This funding is absolutely critical,” he said last month. “It is the backbone of our entire counterterrorism apparatus.”
