‘Without doubt,’ fiend is armed

“I think we can say, without a doubt, he’s armed," Williams said.

Officials said he had money woes and was facing bankruptcy and an eviction. A lawyer who represented him in the past said Stephens also had gambling troubles.

Before the shooting, Stephens posted a video about his desperation.

“The past year’s been really f----- up for me,” Stephens said in the video, shortly before the shooting,

“You know, being with (his ex-girlfriend) drove me crazy, started making me gamble. I lost everything. I lost everything I have. I don't have s---. I’m out of options.”

In the moments leading up to the shooting, Stephens pulled his car up to a curb and calmly said, “I found somebody I’m about to kill. I’m going to kill this guy right here. He’s an old dude, too.”

Stephens got out of the car and approached Godwin, saying, “Hey can you do me a favor?” and asked him to say his girlfriend's name. Godwin appeared confused but said the woman’s name, Joy Lane.

In the video he uploaded to Facebook, Stephens mentions ex-girlfriend Joy Lane in the moments before the shooting, saying to the victim, “She’s the reason why all this about to happen to you.”

In the video, which has since been removed from Facebook, Godwin can be seen raising his hands before he is shot once in the head.

“Look, I don’t know anybody by that name!” Godwin pleaded moments before he died.

Stephens fired one fatal shot at Godwin’s head, and he zoomed in on Godwin’s bloody body on the sidewalk before walking back to his car and getting inside.

As Stephens got in the car, he blamed his ex for his evil deed.

“That mother-----’s dead because of you, Joy,” Stephens said.

Lane, who dated Stephens for several years, said in a statement that Stephens is “a nice guy . . . he is generous with everyone he knows. He was kind and loving to me and my children. This is a very difficult time for me and my family.”

Facebook, in a statement, denounced the murder and the post.

“This is a horrific crime and we do not allow this kind of content on Facebook,” the company said. “We work hard to keep a safe environment on Facebook, and are in touch with law enforcement in emergencies when there are direct threats to physical safety.”

The suspect’s mother told CNN she last saw Stephens on Saturday. She said he told her it would be a miracle if she ever saw him again.

A day later they spoke again, she said, and he told her he was shooting people because he was angry with his girlfriend.

Stephens doesn’t have a criminal record, police said.

But now the FBI has added Stephens to its “Most Wanted” list.

During an NBA playoff game Monday evening at Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena, the Cleveland Cavaliers held a moment of silence in honor of the victim before their game with the Indiana Pacers.

A day earlier, members of the Pacers were told to stay in their hotel as a precaution as authorities searched for the killer.

“We were instructed to stay put because of the situation that was happening last night,” Pacers coach Nate McMillan said during the morning warmup.
