Jet fans turn corner on draft

-

The people have spoken and revealed what most of us already suspected about the 2017 Jets: They need help everywhere. The Daily News conducted a Twitter poll this weekend hoping to find a consensus in the run-up to the 2017 NFL draft: What position should the Jets draft with the No. 6. pick? at the sun. Todd Bowles needs better cornerbacks. It’s no secret that the Jets must add young pieces to the back end. Washington’s Kevin King, who has already made a predraft visit, and Ohio State’s Gareon Conley, who will be making a trip to Florham Park on Tuesday, are quality Day One options. The smartest move for Maccagnan would be to trade down, pick up an extra premium draft pick or two, and select a cornerback. Easier said than done, of course. The Case For: will get a crack at actually playing this season. But if the Jets draft a quarterback with a Top 10 pick, logic suggests that the organization has given up on the former secondrounder without even giving him a chance to prove his worth in real games.

The Case For: The Jets have a massive safety problem. The rehabbing Marcus Gilchrist will probably be cut. Calvin Pryor has had his fair share of issues in Bowles’ defense. There’s little doubt that LSU’s Jamal Adams and Ohio State’s Malik Hooker would upgrade the secondary. The lingering question: Is the No. 6 spot too early to draft a safety? There are plenty of smart football people who believe that it is.

The Case For: Reduced to simplest terms, the Jets need difference makers. A couple of impact players just happen to play positions that don’t exactly scream “No. 6 pick” in this day and age in the NFL.

Would Maccagnan really pull the trigger on a tight end or running back that early? Alabama tight end O.J. Howard would surely help a passing attack that sputtered in 2016. LSU freight train Leonard Fournette might be a once-in-a-decade running back that could make life easier for everyone else on offense (including new play caller John Morton).
