Trump tweet rips ‘ridiculous’ criticism

WASHINGTON — President Trump is complaining about being judged by the first 100 days of his presidency — even though he campaigned on how much he would get done in that time frame.

“No matter how much I accomplish during the ridiculous standard of the first 100 days, & it has been a lot (including S.C.), media will kill!” he tweeted Friday morning. The “S.C.” appears to be a reference to the confirmation of Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Trump has been focused on what he can get done in his first three months-plus in office, seeing it as a major early measure of his presidency. But he so far has come up empty in terms of legislative achievements. That has led to a lot of internal frustration and tension at the White House, as he demands his staff get something — anything — done before he hits the mark on April 29.

That includes a renewed push for the House to rework Obamacare. White House officials floated the idea Thursday that they might try to pass revised legislation next week — before House leaders put the kibosh on that idea — and suddenly ratcheted up demands that lawmakers include funding for the border wall with Mexico in a package to keep the government funded and avoid a shutdown.

Office of Management & Budget Director Mick Mulvaney told The Associated Press on Thursday that “elections have consequences” and “we want wall funding” in the package, a move that could risk a government shutdown as Democrats have made clear that’s a nonstarter.

White House staff have been quietly nervous that heads might roll after 100 days, with a staff shakeup possible if Trump doesn't see some major victories soon. With one week to the deadline, that looks increasingly difficult to accomplish.

Candidate Trump repeatedly vowed to introduce legislation for a middle class tax cut, to repeal Obamacare and to accomplish other measures in his first 100 days. His website even featured a “Contract with the American Voter” that he has failed to fulfill.

Trump’s flip-flop Friday came just a week after he boasted about his time in the White House.

“I don’t think that there is a presidential period of time in the first 100 days where anyone has done nearly what we’ve been able to do,” he told Fox Business.
