Wheel bad news as MadBum hurt on bike

-

The Giants announced that ace Madison Bumgarner is hitting the disabled list after a dirt bike accident Thursday.

The left-hander, who almost single-handedly took down the Mets in last year’s NL Wild Card game, suffered bruised ribs along with an AC sprain in his pitching shoulder, although surgery at this time is probably unnecessary.

The timetable for his return is uncertain, although Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported that the expectation is Bumgarner will miss six to eight weeks.

The DL stint is a first for Bumgarner, who has been a model of durability and consistency over his career. In his first six full MLB season, the lefty has made at least 31 starts and exceeded the 200 innings threshold each year, although that looks unlikely to continue.

— Zachary Ripple l The Boston Red Sox have activated outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. from the disabled list and placed utility player Brock Holt on the 10-day DL with vertigo.

Bradley missed 12 games with a right knee sprain. He was in the starting lineup Friday night against the Orioles.

RONDO THUMBS DOWN

Rajon Rondo is out indefinitely with a broken right thumb, just when everything seemed to be going well for Chicago.

The team announced the injury hours before the Bulls lost to the Boston Celtics, 10487, in Game 3 of their first-round series.

l Chris Paul scored 34 points and the visiting Los Angeles Clippers rallied for a 111-106 victory over the Utah Jazz to take a 2-1 lead in the first-round playoff series.

l Russell Westbrook scored 32 points in a tripledouble, and the host Oklahoma City Thunder held off the Houston Rockets 115-113 to cut their deficit to 2-1 in the firstround Western Conference playoff series.

CAPS WIN JUSTIN TIME

Justin Williams scored the overtime winner as the host Washington Capitals beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-1 in Game 5 to take a 3-2 lead in their first-round series. The Capitals survived a scare when captain Alex Ovechkin left the game late in the first period with an apparent left leg injury, but he returned in the second.

l Sean Kuraly’s second goal of the game at 10:19 of the second overtime gave the visiting Boston Bruins a 3-2 win over the Ottawa Senators in Game 5, avoiding elimination in the first round. David Pastrnak also scored and Tuukka Rask finished with 41 saves.
