LOVE ‘TRAIN’!

Giants like Clemson RB’s grit

- BY PAT LEONARD

Wayne “Train” Gallman initially thought his nickname was “a little corny.”

But it grew on the Clemson power back when the Tigers pumped a train whistle into Death Valley every time he scored a touchdown, 17 to be exact in his final season as a redshirt junior during Clemson’s national championship run.

So maybe the Giants’ 2017 fourth-round pick won’t mind a similar “All Aboard!” announcement at MetLife Stadium this fall when he’s blasting downhill between the tackles.

“My coach and all the Clemson fans (gave me the nickname),” Gallman, 22, said on a conference call Saturday afternoon with a laugh. “The more it was used, they ended up giving me a train sound whenever I scored or made a big run at Clemson Stadium, I just kind of went along with it. And I accept it now.

“I’m a hard, physical runner,” Gallman added of his playing style. “I believe I have all the aspects in the running game that a running back’s supposed to have. I have speed, power, whatever a team needs to get that extra yard.”

The Giants selected Gallman with their ‘Walkie-Leaks’ pick at 140th overall in the compensatory stage of the fourth round, the draft choice that the NFL docked 10 slots back from 130th as penalty for Ben McAdoo’s illegal use of a walkietalkie in a win over the Cowboys.

Jerry Reese needed a bigger back after letting Rashad Jennings walk in free agency to complement passing down back Shane Vereen and shifty Paul Perkins. The Giants’ other backs are free agent signing Shaun Draughn, a versatile back who should factor on special teams, and Orleans Darkwa.

ExPatriot veteran LeGarrette Blount has lingered on the free agent market, but Gallman perhaps will fill Big Blue’s void of a downhill back immediately instead.

TROUBLING PICK: For the first time in the 2017 draft, the Giants took someone with an off-field issue in his past. Avery Moss, the Giants’ 167th overall pick, originally played for Nebraska but in 2014 was charged with public indecency for exposing himself to a student-worker at a convenience store. Moss eventually pleaded no contest to the charges. He was suspended from the school for a year — he said that the suspension actually stemmed from him entering a dormitory he was forbidden from — and worked at a car dealership during his absence. “We think he’s well past those things,” Giants GM Jerry Reese said. “We’ll definitely
