Cabrera injured, X-rays negative

-

The Mets are already plenty banged up, so the last thing they needed was another injury. They got one anyway. In the third inning of Saturday’s 11-3 win over the Marlins, Asdrubal Cabrera dove for a ground ball to his right that was hit by Marcell Ozuna and injured his left thumb in the process. Cabrera, who did not reach the ball, stayed down for a minute and ultimately had to come out of the game, holding his left thumb as he walked off the field.

X-rays taken for a fracture were negative, the Mets announced. Cabrera is expected to undergo an MRI on Sunday.

“He was in quite a bit of pain on the field,” Terry Collins said.

Jose Reyes moved to shortstop and Wilmer Flores subbed in for Cabrera and GETTY slotted in at third base.

Sandy Alderson, speaking on SNY, said the team will consider calling up hot prospect Amed Rosario as a replacement for Cabrera assuming they need one. The 21-yearold was slashing .381/.432/.495 at AAA Las Vegas heading into Saturday’s game.

Collins, speaking after the game, didn’t know if the team would elect to make that move but said he thought Rosario could handle the pressure of jumping into an important situation.

“I don’t know enough about the guy really. From what I saw in spring training I do think he can handle it,” Collins said. “He’s got tremendous actions, he’s got very, very good hands. And if anybody can help him through this particular instance, we’ve got a clubhouse full of guys that can certainly help him.”

But whether they can have a replacement at Citi Field in time for Sunday’s day game is another question.

“It’s gonna be hard to get somebody in from Vegas certainly with a one o’clock game,” Collins said.

When Cabrera got hurt, many of the Mets players on the field converged at shortstop, a testament to how well he is regarded in the clubhouse.

“If anyone knows him it speaks for himself. A true professional,” Jay Bruce said.
