Big stars, including and came out to honor their pal at the 44th Chaplin Award Gala, where Douglas confessed he’s jealous that Bobby D (photo) gets away with saying less than Charlie Chaplin. “He’s not a big talker,” Douglas said of his “Last Vegas” co-star at the Film Society of Lincoln Center event. “He gets away with murder. I’m so jealous because on these things (red carpets), he gives yeses and nos, keeps it clean and simple.” Sure enough, when we congratulated De Niro on his long and accomplished career, he said: “Thanks, thanks — thanks for that,” seeming to imply that he was being called old. When assured that wasn’t the case, the 73-year-old star politely said, “OK, I’ll take that.”
De Niro couldn’t pick a favorite from the films he’s done and sort of said he doesn’t look back. “I don’t know . . . not that much,” he said. However, upon entering the event, De Niro did say to one veteran reporter he seemed to know: “You’re friends with him. the Chump.”
Stiller, who starred alongside De Niro in “Meet the Parents,” said he was “intimidated” by the Oscar-winning honoree. Even now, he gets tongue-tied around Bobby D.
“I can pretend to be comfortable with him, but inside ...” Stiller started. “I’ve been out with him where I’ve had a drink and then I start asking nerdy questions like, ‘So I heard in “Raging Bull” you actually ran 5 miles to the set every day. Is that true?’ ”
Keitel met De Niro shortly before they did “Mean Streets” together in 1973 and has a couple of tales to tell — but he’s not talking.
“You want to get me killed?” he joked. Keitel said those stories aren’t “necessarily bad,” as much as they include “some things you could get killed about.” The Grammys are coming back to New York.
