Bermans ‘warmed’ by support
Chris Berman and his two children say they are “overwhelmed” by the support they have received in the wake of the death of Katherine Berman, the wife of the longtime ESPN broadcaster who was killed in a car accident on Tuesday.
Katherine Berman, a 67-yearold former teacher, died in a two-vehicle wreck at about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday in Woodbury, Conn. The driver of the other vehicle, Edward Bertulis, 87, of Waterbury, was also killed. “We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and sympathy from so many folks we know, and so many others we look forward to knowing,” the family, including kids Meredith and Douglas, said in a statement released by ESPN Wednesday night. “Kathy Berman had a huge heart, and this would have warmed hers beyond belief. It certainly warmed ours. All of us need to keep the family of Edward Bertulis in our thoughts and prayers as well.”
Chris and Kathy were married in 1983, just a few years after he reportedly faked car trouble to be able to ask his future wife out on a date. Kathy, who worked at Waterbury public schools for over a decade, also spent more than 20 years teaching literacy in local underprivileged communities, per the Hartford Courant.
Chris Berman, who joined ESPN one month after it launched in 1979 and has since become one of the network’s most recognizable faces, learned of his wife’s death while watching his beloved San Francisco Giants play the Mets at Citi Field Tuesday night. He turned 62 years old on Wednesday. The site of the crash is not far from the Bermans’ home in Cheshire, and ESPN headquarters in Bristol.
