Extra cops vs. hate crimes for Ramadan

- BY THOMAS TRACY

AN UPTICK in hate crimes against Muslims in the city this year has prompted cops to increase protection of mosques and other Islamic houses of worship for the upcoming holy month of Ramadan, officials said Tuesday.

As of Sunday, 12 hate crimes against Muslims were reported to police — three more than the nine reported by the same time in 2016.

Police Commissioner James O’Neill promised to keep worshipers safe during the monthlong celebration, in which Muslims fast during the day. Ramadan begins May 26.

“This should be a time of reflection and a time of joy,” O’Neill said at a press conference about the holiday at 1 Police Plaza. “This should not be a time of fear or doubt. We want this month to be rewarding and festive because New York City is your home.”

Yet hate crimes remain a concern, the commissioner added.

“Bias crimes have no place in the city,” O’Neill said. “This is an issue we continue to take very seriously.”

New York’s top cop promised extra patrols at Muslim houses of worship once the holiday begins.

“You will see extra police officers,” O’Neill said. “There may be additional resources you won’t see.” The holiday concludes June 25. Overall hate crimes in the city have increased by 56% over last year, officials said.

As of Sunday, 178 hate crimes had been reported in the five boroughs since Jan. 1 — compared with 114 reported during the same period last year, cops said.
