Torres movin’ on up to Triple-A

- BY MIKE MAZZEO

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Gleyber Torres is moving from New Jersey to Pennsylvania. The Yankees promoted their top prospect from Double-A Trenton to Triple-A Scranton following Sunday’s game. Next stop: New York. Torres, a 20-year-old shortstop, recently had a stretch where he hit four homers in five games. In 32 games at Double-A, he hit .273/.367/.496 with five homers and 18 RBI.

The Yankees are extremely high on Torres, but want him to develop properly before they bring him to the big leagues. Granted if he keeps this up, it could be sooner rather than later. Torres could eventually see time

to be at the end of the year.” As for the lack of stolen bases, Girardi replied: “We still want him to run. But it’s really if the opportunities present themselves. We don’t want him to run into outs. He’s got a lot of power behind him in (Gary Sanchez, at second in pinstripes, with Starlin Castro moving to third. Chase Headley has just five hits in his last 12 games.

Torres will now be in the same lineup as prospects Clint Frazier, Dustin Fowler and Tyler Wade.

square one

Masahiro Tanaka will make his next scheduled start on Thursday, Joe Girardi said. Tanaka was shelled again on Saturday, giving up six runs on nine hits in three innings. After the game, pitching coach Larry Rothschild said Tanaka needs to get back to “square one.” “We have to get consistency out of his pitches,” Girardi said. “I think that’s first and foremost. He has to have his consistent splitter and he has to have his consistent slider. If he has those two things, he’s going to be successful. It becomes frustrating for a player that’s used to having a ton of success when you struggle. You can really say this is the first time he’s struggled here for a length of time. It becomes frustrating and I think sometimes you can try to change this or change that. Let’s get back to what made you successful. To me, that’s always square one.”

Greg Bird should start tee-and-toss on Monday when the Yankee return home, Girardi said. Bird (bone bruise, ankle) has been on the disabled list since May 2. TODAY SPORTS Matt Holliday, Starlin Castro, Aaron Judge). I think people are paying closer attention to him, but if the opportunity presents itself, he’s going to run.”

Or Gardner could just keep driving himself in. That works, too.

mitchell report

USA The Yankees have been careful with their 24-year-old first baseman, making sure he is healthy before they decide to take the next step. “The reports we’re getting this week at home have been really good,” Girardi said.

chapman looking better

Aroldis Chapman (rotator cuff inflammation) will see the doctor on Monday.

“He feels good,” Girardi said. “We’ll see exactly when they plan on him starting his throwing program.”

Bryan Mitchell was promoted from Triple-A Scranton for Sunday’s game, with Giovanny Gallegos sent down to make room on the 25-man roster.
