Villa nets pair to lift NYCFC

David Villa scored twice and visiting NYCFC beat Orlando City, 3-0, on Sunday night to extend its unbeaten streak to four games.

Orlando City (6-4-2) lost for the first time in seven matches at its new stadium, dating to a 1-0 victory over NYCFC on March 5.

Villa converted from the spot, after Ricardo Kaka’s hand ball in the penalty area, to open the scoring for NYCFC (6-4-2) in the 14th minute.

Rodney Wallace connected in the 35th. Jack Harrison’s pass from the top-right corner of the box led Ethan White toward the endline, where his cross — through the 6-yard box — found Wallace for a sliding finish at the far post.

Cyle Larin missed a penalty kick off the post in the 64th minute for Orlando City before Villa capped the scoring in the 82nd.

HORSCHEL TAKES NELSON

Billy Horschel a par on the first playoff hole after Jason Day pulled his 4-foot par putt left and past the hole. He won for the fourth time on the PGA Tour. With a 1-under 69, including a 60-foot birdie putt at the 14th, Horschel matched Day (68) at 12-under 268.

l Lexi Thompson shot a 6-under 65 to finish off a wire-to-wire victory in the Kingsmill Championsh­ip in Williamsbu­rg, Va., with a tournament-record 20-under 264 total. She won by five shots. The victory came in Thompson’s third event since she lost the ANA Inspiratio­n in a playoff after being penalized four strokes for a rules violation reported by a television viewer during the final round.

ZVEREV TOPS DJOKOVIC

Alexander Zverev signaled his anticipate­d arrival among the tennis elite by defeating Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3 to win the Italian Open in Rome. The 20-year-old Zverev became the youngest player to win a Masters 1000 event since Djokovic won in Miami a decade ago at 19.

DIXON WINS INDY 500 POLE

Scott Dixon had the fastest lap and the fastest four-lap qualifying average in 21 years to win his third Indianapol­is 500 pole. The New Zealander finished with a qualifying speed of 232.164 mph, the best since Arie Luyendyk’s track record of 236.986 in 1996. Dixon’s first lap of 232.595 also was the fastest since Luyendyk’s record lap of 237.498 in 1996.
