The Foot Center of New York helps support older feet

- Foot pain is never normal Diabetes is a special focus

Perhaps you’ve noticed some signs of age on your face recently, but have you noticed the signs of age on your feet?

Your feet may have gotten wider and flatter. They are not as well cushioned, and the skin is drier than it used to be. Perhaps you’ve noticed these changes or that your shoes just don’t fit as well as they once did. Modifying or replacing your shoes, adding padding or insoles may be all it takes to make you more comfortable, but foot pain that signals more serious issues is common among seniors and the elderly. Pain may not only hamper movement, but may cause knee, hip and back problems in people who move differently or hold themselves differently to try to avoid the pain.

Pain in the feet is never normal, and shouldn’t be accepted as a consequence of aging. Neither should brittle, discolored nails, small wounds that won’t heal, burning, cold or tingling sensations, or numbness. None of these are normal and all require an immediate visit to a podiatrist who can diagnose and treat the current issue. They will also be able to see if the symptoms are signs of a larger disease, such as diabetes, arthritis or PAD (peripheral arterial disease).

The Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPMs) at the Foot Center of New York are experts in the treatment of all ailments of the lower extremity — of the foot and ankle — and are particularly skilled at diagnosing systemic disease.

The Foot Center of New York (FCNY), located at 55 East 124th Street in East Harlem, is dedicated to serving all the residents of Harlem and New York City. The modern, convenient facilities provide everything needed for comprehensive foot care. The experienced clinicians of FCNY provide the highest quality health and podiatric medical care to all of their patients; they are dedicated to helping each one walk and stand on pain-free feet and ankles.

FCNY’s podiatrists evaluate and then treat your feet. Diabetes and wound care are special focuses of the center, as are common foot problems caused by standing for long periods of the day, shoes, activities and structure of the feet and body, and by participation in sports. FCNY also has podiatrists specially trained in the health of children’s feet.

Established in 1911 by foot specialists who volunteered to care for the immigrants arriving in Harlem, FCNY is located near all forms of major transportation. FCNY accepts Medicare, most Medicaid HMOs and other insurances. Call for an appointment and visit www.footcenterofny.org.
