Report: Beckham a no-show for OTAs

- BY PAT LEONARD

Odell Beckham Jr. reportedly did not show for the Giants’ first day of voluntary OTAs Monday in East Rutherford.

Players aren’t required to attend any of Big Blue’s 10 voluntary practices leading up to their mandatory three-day minicamp June 13-15. But OTAs in the NFL typically are well-attended, and on Monday the Giants posted video of starters such as Eli Manning, Brandon Marshall, Jason Pierre-Paul and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie on the crowded field inside Quest Diagnostics Training Center.

However, there was no sign of Beckham, according to Dan Duggan of NJ Advance Media. Monday’s session was closed to the media. The Giants’ first media access of OTAs is Thursday.

Beckham’s 2016 season ended with GM Jerry Reese challenging him to mature despite his world-class talent. Beckham also missed Eli Manning’s annual passing camp with Giants teammates at Duke in early April because he had scheduled oral surgery the same week.

Beckham vowed on Twitter in April, after the Giants picked up his fifth-year option for the 2018 season, that he “will be workin(g) harder than I ever have to be the best that I ever have been.” So the optics of not showing on Monday seem strange in that context, despite the workouts being voluntary.

SHOPPING FOR DEFENSE: Jerry Reese continues to search for upgrades on defense. Former Detroit Lions defensive end Devin Taylor, 27, visited the Giants, per ESPN. And inside linebacker Gerald Hodges, 26, a former San Francisco 49er and Minnesota Viking, is visiting the Giants on Tuesday, according to Pro Football Talk.

Taylor has 15 career sacks and 92 tackles in four seasons with Detroit.

Hodges, a 6-2, 236-pound linebacker and former Minnesota fourth-round pick out of Penn State, hails from Woodbury, N.J., and Paulsboro High School in South Jersey. Hodges had a career highs in tackles (83) and sacks (3.0) last season.
