CAMPAIGN PROMISES FALL BY WAYSIDE

Several of the proposals in President Trump’s budget plan contradict his campaign promises:

-

MEDICAID AND SOCIAL SECURITY

Trump promised no cuts to these programs from day one of his campaign — literally.

In the speech announcing his run for the 2016 race, he said he would “save Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security without cuts. Have to do it.”

Trump’s budget lists a $610 billion reduction in Medicaid funding on top of the $880 billion in Medicaid that is already set to be slashed in the GOP’s health care replacement bill.

The budget also asks for a $72 billion cut to Social Security Disability Insurance.

THE MEXICO WALL

Remember how Trump was going to build the border wall, and Mexico was going to pay for it — another thing he said from day one? America is on the hook for it. The budget seeks to set aside $1.6 billion for the wall’s construction.

HELP THE POOR AND WORKING CLASS

The budget is littered with reductions to services helping the neediest Americans, including the food stamps program ($191 billion cut in the next decade) and the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families ($22 billion cut). Rural Trump supporters will also feel the hurt, with $38 billion in farm subsidies set to get pulled.

REDUCE THE DEBT, BOOST GROWTH

One might think these Draconian cuts serve the purpose of two grand Trump promises: “Quickly” reducing the $18 trillion federal debt and boosting economic growth by 3%. It is set to do neither. The proposed budget has no projection for debt reduction.

Meanwhile, former Office of Management and Budget Director Jim Nussle said on CNBC on Tuesday that the budget would push America’s economic growth only by 1.9%. A 3% jump would be nearly impossible for any budget proposal. Jason Silverstein
