Ross done on radio

- BY PETER BOTTE

THE first significant changes for the Devils this summer are coming off the ice, with popular and pioneering radio analyst Sherry Ross let go by the team after 10 seasons in the booth.

The longtime newspaper reporter and columnist served as the Devils’ radio color commentator from 1992 through their first of three Stanley Cup championships in 1995, and then again from 2007 through this past season, when her contract was not renewed.

In 1994, Ross became the first female broadcaster to provide game analysis during the Stanley Cup Final, working with Kenny Albert on NHL Radio for the Rangers’ 54-year drought-busting victory over Vancouver. She also became the first female broadcaster to do full play-byplay when she called a Devils’ game against Ottawa in 2009. Between her stints with the Devils, Ross served as a hockey beat writer and columnist for the Daily News from 1995-2007, and she previously held writing jobs at The Record of Bergen County, Newsday and The National.

The Devils confirmed Ross’ departure to NJ.com after she revealed the news Tuesday on her Twitter account, but she declined further comment when reached by phone on Wednesday.

“I wish nothing but the best for the Devils players and coaches,” Ross had tweeted. “But keep an eye on eBay for lots of NJD merchandise on sale soon!”

The Devils, who will pick first overall in the June entry draft after finishing last overall in the Eastern Conference this season, also reportedly relieved head equipment manager Rich Matthews and video coordinator Taran Singleton of their duties.

The Record reported that playby-play announcer Matt Loughlin likely will return to the booth with a new partner next season.
