Group: Films lag on LGBT themes
LGBT — who?
The LGBTQ community is practically invisible on the big screen, according to a report by a national advocacy group.
In its fifth annual review of movie roles, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation found that a mere 23 of the 125 films major studios released last year included LGBTQ characters.
Gay men, at 83%, continued to be the community’s most represented group, followed by lesbians, 23% and bisexuals, 13%. The group lamented that Harley Quinn’s bi identity “was completely erased in the ‘Suicide Squad’ film.” GLAAD said transgender representation was “abysmally low,” and noted the lone trans character “was used a punchline in ‘Zoolander 2.’ ”
The group also said racial diversity among LGBTQ characters continued to drop from 32.1% in 2014, to 25.5% in 2015 to 20% last year.
