2nd chance in slay rap

- Thomas Tracy and Christina Carrega

A MAN imprisoned for a murder he says he didn’t commit is getting a chance at vindication.

Brooklyn prosecutors earlier this month agreed to conduct a hearing for Shawn Williams, who’s spent almost 24 years in prison for the July 1993 murder of Marvin Mason. Mason was shot in the head at an Eastern Parkway building in Crown Heights.

Williams was named as a suspect after witnesses told officers, including now-retired Detectives Louis Scarcella and Stephen Chmil, that Williams was seen leaving the building where Mason was shot.

Williams’ hopes hinge on a witness who later recanted her testimony. She said she was pressured by Scarcella and Chmil, though a prosecutor noted the hearing won’t entertain claims of misconduct.

Williams was sentenced to 25 years to life.
