Ben: ‘No accuracy’ to accusation

- BY SETH WALDER

Ben McAdoo quickly shot down Victor Cruz’s conspiracy theory over why the former Giants receiver didn’t have much production last year.

Cruz, in an interview with 105.1 FM’s “The Breakfast Club” this week, suggested that last year Eli Manning may have been instructed not to throw the ball to the salsa-dancing receiver so that it would be easier for the Giants to get rid of him after the season.

“There’s no accuracy to it,” McAdoo said Thursday when he was asked about Cruz’s comments.

The Giants released Cruz in February. The wide receiver agreed to terms with the Bears on Thursday.

McAdoo initially was hesitant to answer questions about Cruz but eventually elected to deny the accusation. When asked if he had spoken to or felt the need to speak with Cruz, the Giants head coach said, “Next question.”

Cruz’s claims just sound like sour grapes.

“It’s hard to believe,” Cruz said. “Even just to think about someone coming up to the quarterback and saying ‘Hey, don’t throw it here’ or ‘don’t give it to this guy’ — it’s hard to even fathom that thought. Which I don’t even know or think happens. I doubt it. But when you look at the film and look at how it goes down, it’s the only way.”

Cruz caught 39 passes for 586 yards and one touchdown. While he may have his own theories about why he didn’t have better numbers, it was pretty clear to most observers that he wasn’t getting open very often.
