Dragged cop shows signs he’s on mend
THE BROOKLYN COP critically injured when a 15-year-old gang member dragged him 21/2 blocks is showing signs of improvement.
NYPD Officer Darsh Veve, 35, underwent another surgery on Monday, officials said. Although he is still weak, he managed to squeeze his wife's hand, a colleague who visited him said Tuesday.
“He seems to be doing better,” the visitor, a retired NYPD cop said. “He’s still unconscious, but stable.”
“He’s hanging in there,” added another cop, who visited Veve on Tuesday.
Veve suffered a massive head injury when Justin Murrell allegedly dragged the cop in a stolen Honda Civic in East Flatbush around 11:50 a.m. Saturday.
“He’s an extraordinary cop, an extraordinary man, and has an extraordinary family,” NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill said during a Medal Day ceremony at police headquarters Tuesday.
Veve, a married father of a 2-year-old girl, managed to fire his gun twice, hitting Murrell. The cop hit his head on the pavement, sources said. Murrell, who was shot in the face, remained in the hospital Tuesday, awaiting arraignment on attempted murder charges.
Two women in the car, Jeronda Oliver, 18, and Eboni Clinton, 19, were both charged with hindering prosecution, officials said. Sources said the teen has 11 prior arrests and is a member of the 8 Trey Gang.
