Remember FALN’s foulest deed

-

Brooklyn: I worked across from Fraunces Tavern on Jan. 24, 1975, and was lucky to have missed by minutes the FALN bombing that killed four and injured dozens. I feel very strongly opposed to FALN leader Oscar López Rivera even marching as a civilian in the National Puerto Rican Day Parade. He might want to do the right thing and not march at all after all of the pain that the victims and their families suffered. An unrepentant López Rivera’s appearance in the parade at any level would seem to be an atrocious attempt by him to rub salt in the still very open wounds of his victims and to the memories of Puerto Ricans, who do not approve of terrorism and bloodshed to fight for the liberation of Puerto Rico.

Even the publicity being given to this man is sickening. For the sake of those people who died and were hurt in those bombings, please don’t give this man any more publicity. This is not the true spirit of the people of Puerto Rico. Further, 61% of the people of Puerto Rico voted for statehood in the 2012 plebiscite. The island does not want a terrorist liberator. This man should not march in the parade at all, especially in a city where 3,000 people died from a horrible terrorist attack. I disagree with Juan Gonzalez’s June 5 column (“Not just a ‘terrorist’ ”) about what the Puerto Rican population has to say when the record shows that a greater percentage of Puerto Ricans do not support independence for Puerto Rico, nor do we approve of terrorism.

If I had López Rivera’s telephone number, I would call him up myself and try and convince him not to march in the parade.

Terror is terror

Clifton, N.J.: Juan Gonzalez’s column fails to mention that two Presidents offered to release the terrorist Oscar López Rivera if he renounced violence and López Rivera refused. It is unclear whether President Obama asked for or received this pledge from López Rivera. And none of the other terrorists Gonzales mentioned ever killed any Americans on American soil. And worst yet, only a small fraction of Puerto Ricans have ever wanted independence; most want it to be a state.

Murder is murder

Manhattan: With all due respect to Juan Gonzalez, his opinion is based upon logical fallacies. The fact that others have done something does not make it correct to follow their example. And by the way, the African National Congress did not advocate bombings in Europe. If the FALN felt they were at war, they should have responded defensively on their own soil. There is no justification for murdering innocent civilians. Gonzalez, in spite of your Boricua pride, you also do not have the right to name heroes for the rest of us proud Boricuas. It would be better to keep politics out of the parade, which is essentially a cultural celebration.

London stands as D.C. ducks

Staten Island: I don’t care what party you belong to or who you voted for, but to see a tweet from our grossly inept and uninformed (I guess that tells you whom I didn’t vote for) No. 45 trying to tell us what Mayor Sadiq Khan’s thought process was and what he was saying to the citizens of London about not being alarmed at an increased police presence shows yet once again exactly what a jerk No. 45 truly is. How dare he extrapolate — or just plain old not understand what was being said — from the mayor’s statement and take it upon himself to further his own agenda and ego by taking what was said out of context and tweeting about it? Did he think he needed to interpret the statement and explain what Khan’s meaning was, just like his aides and lackeys constantly have to do over and over again with every word he utters? Although I am sure his Trumpkins are chanting “Way to go, Prez!” he can take a note or two from Khan on how to talk to (without talking down to) his citizens and how to be a reassuring role model at a time of crisis. Every time you think this guy can’t go and do something more stupid than the last thing he did, he proves ya wrong. Stay tuned.

We are losing the war on drugs

Bronx: On 9/11, at least 3,000 Americans were killed. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have killed more than 9,000 American soldiers and civilians. But still the total number is not close to the 62,000 Americans killed from drug overdoses in 2016. We are an opioid nation, and the terrorists are the drug dealers. We should be more afraid of them than ISIS terrorists. Yet, our smartest President, Donald Trump, has the brilliant idea of cutting the Office of National Drug Control Policy funds by 95%, from $388 million to $24 million. But his precious wall will cost billions of dollars. What wall in history have long endured? We have met the enemy and it is our egotistic and stupid President.

Head case

Middle Village: Kathy Griffin should look on the bright side: She was not going to make the front page of the Daily News because of her talent. She has to be the comedian who gets the least laughs. But she’s not the first crazy liberal to do a stupid thing like this to get some attention. If Barack Obama were still President, he probably would have given her the Medal of Freedom over this. Maybe George Clooney will give her a part in his next picture. Michael Geraci

Heaven was against her

Bellport, L.I.: Hillary Clinton is still in denial. Instead of blaming former FBI Director James Comey, Russia, WikiLeaks and misogyny for her defeat, she should look in the mirror to see the person who caused her defeat. Clinton’s constant dishonesty and her stand against freedom of religion were two major factors that turned a huge number of voters against her. Catholics, who usually vote Democratic, came out en masse against her and so did evangelical Protestants. People of faith could not stomach this evil woman, a true agent of Satan. Only time will tell us what kind of President Donald Trump will be, but his strong support of freedom of religion is one of his strong points. We can all thank God that we did not get Hillary Clinton as our President.

Still feeling the Bern

Hamden, Conn.: My daughters and I would like to thank you for covering Sen. Bernie Sanders’ commencement speech at Brooklyn College (“Elex is over but keep fighting, Bernie tells B’klyn grads,” May 31). He may have lost the primary election, but Sanders is speaking out, in the manner of revolutionary firebrand Patrick Henry. Our hearts will always belong to Bernie.

Stop hiding in plain view

Brooklyn: When I am walking on New York City’s streets, I see cars that have windows so dark you can’t tell what’s inside or see in. This is no good for police officers who have to observe or respond to a situation inside an automobile if the person in there is up to something. Barry Sandler

The good ol’ parking meters

Bronx: Who voted to put MuniMeters in NYC? I never saw a ballot to vote for them. Whoever invented these meters most likely isn’t a driver or probably has a chauffeur. Traditional old-time meters forced drivers to park correctly in line with the meter and not hog up two spaces. When a Muni-Meter is not working, you have to find one by walking a block away or across the street even in the rain or snow and leaving your car unattended is risking the chance of getting a ticket. Would you leave your kids in the car to search for a working meter? What to do? Whoever runs for mayor and vows to get rid of these muni monsters and bring back the old parking meters gets my vote! Keeping the faith

Bayside: There is so much sin and wickedness in our society. I love Christian music, and my favorite actor is Kirk Cameron because he is a God-fearing man who is not afraid to promote goodness and decency in the entertainment industry. Conservatives need to keep fighting, or else there will be persecution of traditionalist Christians and Jews in America. Religious liberty is very important. A great film to watch is “A Man for All Seasons,” concerning the martyrdom of St. Thomas More. He was beheaded because he stuck to his beliefs.

Recognition where it’s due

AP Orlando: People are correct to be upset that President Trump failed to recognize June as Gay Pride Month. But President Obama never recognized September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and the press never wrote about it. Hopefully, in three months Trump will not make the same error. Jay Leonard
