Even extra day of rest can’t help deGrom if he has no idea ‘where the ball is going’

We have to wait on Ces?

not there. I know this would have been a nice place to have him for sure.”

But Cespedes is still taking live batting practice and going through what the Mets will only say is a “running protocol,” which includes sprinting and running the bases at some point.

Ricco said that he expects the Mets brass and rehab personnel to have a conversation with Cespedes “in the next few days,” about whether he wants to play in a minor-league rehab game. Ricco said it’s not a given that Cespedes will need a rehab game before returning.

It was in a minor league rehab game May 27 that Cespedes suffered a “setback.” He was shut down the next day after experiencing soreness in his right quad running the bases in that game.

The Mets have been purposely vague about their injury updates recently. They have been under scrutiny how they handle their injuries, because they have gained a reputation of having the injuries balloon into longer DL stints than expected. They were criticized for how they handled Noah Syndergaard, who is on the DL until the All-Star break with a torn lat muscle after refusing an MRI despite complaining of biceps discomfort. The Mets also looked bad with Cespedes, who had missed three games after felling what he described as a “shock,” in his left hamstring the week before he pulled the hamstring.

So all Collins could say was that he will wait for word on Cespedes’ availability like everyone else.

Curtis Granderson (1-for-3, with HR and 2 RBIs) was the DH, with Collins preferring to put Juan Lagares (4-for-5 with 2 runs scored) in center field.

“Another one of these big outfields so I thought I’d put the kid out there in center field who can play pretty well so I’m going to put him out there,” Collins said.

Jose Reyes will likely get into the lineup Wednesday, after sitting the last four. Collins will likely use Asdrubal Cabrera as his DH on Wednesday and let Reyes play shortstop. Wilmer Flores (3-for-5) started at third base over Reyes.
