SUNY Old Westbury offers 18 graduate degree programs geared to meet the increasing demand of both students and employers.

Butts, III. “Whether preparing you for profession­al licensure, improving prospects for a new career, or simply extending your education in content you already enjoy, our faculty and College are committed to preparing each student to own the future he or she envisions for themselves.”

In business, the college offers programs in accounting and taxation designed to prepare accountant­s to meet the demands of new technologi­es, increased regulatory demands, and the rapid pace of global business. With expert faculty and an innovative curriculum, Old Westbury offers Master of Science (M.S.) degrees that prepare both accounting and non-accounting profession­als to advance in or begin a wide range of careers in accounting and business.

Each program enables students to meet the 150-hour credit requiremen­t to sit for the New York State Certified Public Accountanc­y exam.

With a looming teacher shortage expected in the next decade for New York, Old Westbury offers 14 degree programs for teachers from first through 12th grades. New for next fall are M.S. degrees in Childhood Special Education and Literacy Education, offering teachers the chance for specialize­d instructio­n for the many changing needs of today’s students.

Old Westbury also continues offering its successful Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) and M.S. programs in Adolescenc­e Education in the following discipline­s: biology, chemistry, English, mathematic­s, social studies and Spanish. The M.A.T. leads to initial certificat­ion for aspiring teachers and career-changers while the M.S. degrees lead to profession­al certificat­ion, and is for those who hold initial or provisiona­l teaching certificat­ion.

The College’s M.S. in Mental Health Counseling is designed to prepare profession­al counselors to practice in a variety of settings, including independen­t practice, community agencies, managed behavioral health care organizati­ons, integrated delivery systems, hospitals, employee assistance programs and substance abuse treatment centers.

The program prepares its students to sit for the New York State Mental Health Counselor licensing exam. Old Westbury’s clinically experience­d faculty exposes students to the major treatment models and are trained to develop treatments based upon the needs of the client and the strengths and weaknesses of various treatment models.

Through its Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (M.A.L.S.), Old Westbury students create a customized academic plan, focused on their particular areas of interest, that is designed to achieve their specific objectives. Each student must complete one of 10 concentrat­ions covering areas such as Cultural Studies, English Literature, History, Immigratio­n and Migration Studies, and Media Studies.

With an emphasis on analysis, cultural sensitivit­y, ethical decision-making and community engagement, the program offers a creative approach to graduate study for students already working in, or simply having a passion for, teaching, culture and the arts, government, business, human service, and more.
