Young people build pathways to careers in Job Corps

-

Job Corps locations in the New York City area are accepting applications from motivated students who want to launch careers in highdemand industries. Many young people nationwide receive tuition-free career training and education in Job Corps, a U.S. Department of Labor program.

Job Corps provides eligible youth, ages 16 through 24, with industry-recognized credentials from within a wide selection of high-demand employment sectors: Health Care, Homeland Security, Information Technology, Manufacturing, Transportation, Construction, and others.

Students learn at their own pace and can graduate within 8 to 15 months, depending on the programs selected, whether the student will be working on a high school diploma (or equivalency), and other factors. English language learning programs and driver education courses are offered, along with options to attend community college in some programs. Advanced programs, like Advanced Manufacturing, offer high-level technical skills training.

Through work-based learning projects, students meet potential employers and practice skills in real work environments. Students may also participate in evening study sessions, leadership and community programs, mentoring, and recreational activities.

Most Job Corps students live in dormitories, but some nonresidential slots are also available.

Meals and housing are provided to students, as is basic medical care. Job Corps also offers a small living allowance to assist with personal expenses.

Youth who reside in the New York City area are likely to attend one of the following Job Corps centers: Brooklyn, South Bronx, Cassadaga, Delaware Valley, Iroquois, Glenmont, and Oneonta (NY); Edison (NJ); Westover (MA); Hartford, New Haven (CT); Loring, Penobscot (ME), Grafton, Shriver, Westover (MA); New Hampshire (NH); Exeter (RI); and Northlands (VT). Three Job Corps centers are also located in Puerto Rico.

Visit www.recruiting.jobcorps.gov to learn more about the Job Corps program, request a brochure (English/Spanish), or to begin the application process and get referred directly to an admissions specialist. Job Corps also maintains a toll-free telephone number (718) 522-0144.
