Buggy tale is ‘couched’ by White House
COMEY HIGHLIGHTS Look, I’ve seen the tweet about tapes. Lordy, I hope there are tapes.
LET’S GO to the audiotapes — if they exist.
White House deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters she has “no idea” whether there is a taping system in place in the West Wing.
Sanders’ comment came after former FBI Director James Comey testified that he hoped he was surreptitiously taped by President Trump, because the tapes would prove he was telling the truth about their encounters.
“Lordy, I hope there are tapes,” Comey said.
When questioned on whether there were recordings of Trump’s meetings during a press briefing Thursday, Sanders (photo bottom) quipped: “Sure, I’ll try to look under the couches.”
Back in May, Trump fired off a tweet that seemed to take aim at Comey, warning him against sharing information with the media in the wake of his termination.
“James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversation before he starts leaking to the press!” the President wrote.
White House officials have refused to comment on the possible existence of a recording mechanism in the Oval Office ever since.
Politicians on both sides on the aisle have said if there are tapes, they need to be preserved and handed over to congressional investigators.
“The President surely knows if he taped me,” Comey testified. “All I can do is hope.”
If Trump taped him, he added, “My feelings aren’t hurt.
“I’ll consent to the release of them,” he said.
He said it had “never occurred” to him that there might be recordings of their meeting before the President’s tweet.
