McCain on trip to Hil and back

- BY CHRISTOPHER BRENNAN

THE “STRAIGHT Talk Express” caused much confusion during James Comey’s testimony on Tuesday.

Sen. John McCain (below) — who has prided himself on his penchant for straight talk over the years — had observers scratching their heads during his questioning of Comey.

The Arizona Republican repeatedly juxtaposed Comey’s public announcements about conclusions in the probe of Hillary Clinton’s private email server with the ongoing nature of the look into whether there was any Trump campaign collusion with the Kremlin.

“I think there’s a double standard there, to tell you the truth,” he said.

McCain said he still had a lot of questions about the matter, and suggested at one point that the former secretary of state had been investigated for involvement with the Russian interference, rather than her server.

“We have not announced, and there was no predication to announce, an investigation into whether the Russians may have coordinated with Secretary Clinton’s campaign,” Comey clarified.

The longtime senator stumbled through his words at points, and made references to “President Comey” when he meant President Trump.

Some social media users said that the slipups may have been the result of age, though McCain, 80, later blamed a lack of sleep, and too much baseball.

“I get the tense from Twitter that my line of questioning today went over people’s heads. Maybe, going forward, I shouldn’t stay up late watching the Diamondbacks’ night games,” he said in a statement.
