METSGAMEDAY

- By KRISTIE ACKERT

Just when it looked like the Mets were pulling it together, it falls apart again. Matt Harvey struggled to get through four innings with diminished velocity, raising concerns about his health, and Neil Walker left the game in the third after injuring his left leg.

But Curtis Granderson’s 300th career home run and Lucas Duda’s threerun homer in the eighth inning were enough to give the Mets a 9-4 win over the Cubs at Citi Field Wednesday night.

It gave the Mets (30-34) their sixth win in their last eight games and pulled them to within four games of .500. Still, it was not enough to overcome the concerns the game raised. Walker needed help getting off the field after pulling up, grabbing the back of his left thigh trying to run out a bunt. The team announced he had a “left leg injury,” and would have an MRI Thursday. According to reports in Las Vegas, Triple-A second baseman Gavin Cecchini was scratched before their game, which means he is likely to come fill in for an injured Walker.

Harvey allowed four runs on four hits over four innings. He walked one and struck out five. His velocity was down noticeably.

“This is a big win for us, especially going into tomorrow night,” Terry Collins said of the Nationals coming to Citi Field Thursday night.

PLAY oF THE GAME

Just for the sheer power, Kyle Schwarber’s fourth-inning home run was the most memorable play of the night. The Cubs’ left fielder cleared the Shea Bridge, past the bullpen and seating area in right-center field. It was an estimated 465 feet and gave the Cubs a 4-1 lead.

TURNING PoINT

Curtis Granderson’s 300th career home run was a huge one. The outfielder led off the eighth with a shot to right field giving the Mets their first lead of the night.

STAR oF THE GAME

Lucas Duda’s three-run shot in the eighth inning not only sealed the win for the Mets, but was his 120th career homer. That moved him past Ed Kranepool on the Mets all-time list and tied him with Edgardo Alfonzo for the ninth most.
