Google’s $1M Stonewall gift to gay history

- Erin Durkin

GOOGLE WILL donate $1 million to tell the stories of people involved in the uprising at the Stonewall Inn that launched the gay rights movement.

The gift by Google.org, the internet giant’s nonprofit wing, to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center, will go to finding and recording oral histories and other narratives from players in the clashes with cops at the West Village gay bar in 1969.

Sen. Chuck Schumer announced the gift Sunday.

“"This announcement sends an unmistakable message to Washington: that the America we know celebrates and cherishes its diversity; it doesn’t hide from it or fear it,” he said.

“With this money, they will translate the legacy of Stonewall from a physical landmark into a digital experience, so that the lessons of its history can reach tens of millions of people across the nation, and across the globe.”

The project is slated to be completed in time for the 50th anniversary of the historic riots in 2019.
