London mosque horror
A MAN driving a van barreled into a group of worshipers who had just left a London mosque early Monday, killing at least one and raising fears in the city that had already endured two recent terrorist attacks, police said.
Witnesses grabbed the 48-yearold driver, preventing him from fleeing from the crash that left 10 people injured, authorities said. His motives were unclear, but witnesses said it was no accident.
“Basically, a van swerved into them deliberately,” said Miqdaad Versi of the Muslim Council Of Britain, citing witnesses.
Versi said the pedestrians were helping a man who had collapsed near the Finsbury Park Mosque in North London following a Ramadan prayer when the van careened into them.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan described the crash on Seven Sisters Road in the Finsbury Park neighborhood around 12:15 a.m. Monday as a “major incident.”
Prime Minister Theresa May later said it was being treated as a potential terrorist attack.
Police said several witnesses held down the driver while waiting for authorities.
One told BuzzFeed the driver, who had not been publicly identified, shouted “I want to kill all Muslims!”
Another witness said the driver had remained silent, but he had no doubt of the man’s intentions.
“It was not an accident,” Boubou Sougou told The Guardian. “People were badly injured. The van driver tried to escape, but people grabbed him.”
One man died at the crash site and eight other people were rushed to three local hospitals. Two victims were treated at the scene, officials said.
Cynthia Vanzella tweeted she heard “loads of screaming” after the crash.
London has already suffered two attacks with vehicles this year, including one this month.
On March 22, a 52-year-old British citizen rammed a car into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, killing four. He then fatally stabbed a police officer before being killed by police. On June 3 three men crashed a van into pedestrians on London Bridge before attacking the nearby Borough Market using knives. Eight people were killed, and cops shot three attackers to death.
In Manchester on May 22, a suicide bomber killed 22 people, many children, who were attending an Ariana Grande concert.
