Slay bust of sgt. stirs call for job action
THE HEAD OF THE NYPD sergeants union has called for a department-wide slowdown in the wake of a sergeant’s arrest on a murder charge for killing a schizophrenic Bronx woman.
“Follow the Patrol Guide no matter how long it takes,” Ed Mullins, president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association, wrote Thursday on Facebook in a message to his members. “Please do not jeopardize your career, nor your freedom while trying to do what is right, what is just and what we all do every day of the week.”
In the past, union leaders have called for slowdowns by telling members to follow the Patrol Guide, which would increase the time it takes to respond to — and close out — every police action.
An arrest slowdown by cops enraged Mayor de Blasio following the December execution-style killings of Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu and created a public relations nightmare for the department.
A high-ranking NYPD source said most cops will ignore Mullins’ call for a slowdown.
“We are confident that they will continue to do the great work that they have been doing,” the source said.
City Hall spokesman Austin Finan agreed.
“We’re confident that sergeants and all other ranks of the department will continue their stellar work to reduce crime and strengthen relationships with the people they serve,” Finan said.
Thursday’s call comes in response to the arrest of Sgt. Hugh Barry, who was arraigned on murder charges last month for fatally shooting Deborah Danner. Barry shot Danner Oct. 18 after she picked up a baseball bat and began swinging it at the sergeant inside her Pugsley Ave. home in Norwood.
De Blasio and Police Commissioner James O’Neill immediately denounced the shooting, claiming Barry didn’t follow the department’s “isolate and contain” rules regarding mentally ill residents.
