Ichiro sets mark for the aged in Marlins’ victory

MIAMI — The Cubs wasted a strong pitching performanc­e by Mike Montgomery, stranding 11 runners and allowing three unearned runs to lose Sunday to the Marlins, 4-2, as Ichiro Suzuki, 43, became the oldest player to start in center field since at least 1900, surpassing Rickey Henderson.

Suzuki batted leadoff for the first time this year and went 0-for-4, dropping his average to .200.

CARDINALS 8, PIRATES 4: Randal Grichuk homered in his return to the majors, Yadier Molina had three hits and host St. Louis beat Pittsburgh.

A’S 5, WHITE SOX 3: Sonny Gray pitched four-hit ball over seven innings, Adam Rosales and Matt Joyce hit backto-back homers in the ninth, and the Athletics rallied to beat the host White Sox.

ORIOLES 8, RAYS 5: Joey Rickard hit a tiebreakin­g double in the ninth inning and the visiting Orioles, boosted by home runs from Caleb Joseph, Trey Mancini and Jonathan Schoop, beat the Rays.

TWINS 4, INDIANS 0: Ervin Santana and the Twins are on top of the AL Central again. Santana struck out seven in six innings, Jason Castro drove in three runs and the visiting Twins swept the Indians with a 4-0 victory.

ANGELS 4, RED SOX 2: Parker Bridwell pitched a solid 6.2 innings and the Angels scored three runs after their challenge overturned an inning-ending double play in the second, leading them to victory in Boston.

BREWERS 7 BRAVES 0: In Atlanta, Travis Shaw became the first player to reach SunTrust Park’s rightfield roof, belting a two-run homer that helped the Brewers beat Julio Teheran and the Braves.

REDS 6, NATIONALS 2: Scooter Gennett homered and collected four hits, and the Reds scored five times in the first inning off Tanner Roark en route to a 6-2 victory over the host Nationals.

BLUE JAYS 8, ROYALS 2: Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna struck out three in a scoreless ninth inning a day after saying he was dealing with anxiety issues, and Toronto avoided a sweep against the Royals in Kansas City.

DODGERS 12, ROCKIES 6: In Los Angeles, the Dodgers found a new way to extend their winning streak to 10 games, scoring five runs on four wild pitches to go along with two more homers from rookie sensation Cody Bellinger in rallying past the Rockies.

TIGERS 7, PADRES 5: Mikie Mahtook drove in three runs, including a tiebreakin­g two-run single in the ninth inning to help the visiting Tigers snap an eight-game losing streak.

D-BACKS 2, PHILLIES 1 (11): Daniel Descalso lined a run-scoring single in the bottom of the 11th inning and the Diamondbac­ks extended the best start in franchise history to 48-28.

ASTROS 8, MARINERS 2: George Springer, Yuli Gurriel and Evan Gattis hit long home runs and the visiting Astros wrapped up another winning road trip.
