Jonesing for a bus

-

Ever since Robert Moses opened Jones Beach State Park off Nassau County’s South Shore in the summer of 1929, those six miles of sand and two miles of boardwalk have been a summertime wonderland. Gov. Cuomo is justly proud of this treasure. But on weekdays this summer, like today, the beach is unreachable to anyone without a car. That’s a kick of sand in the eye to New Yorkers. Unsurprisingly, the beach, run by the state parks department, was designed to be car-focused by the car-focused Moses. Still, for decades there’s been quick and cheap bus service from the Freeport Long Island Rail Road station right to the water just 19 minutes away.

It starts on Memorial Day on weekends, and becomes daily from the end of June until Labor Day.

But not this summer. The private operator Nassau Inter-County Express — NICE, funded by the county — has cut back a number of routes, including weekday service to Jones Beach. Not nice.

It means LIRR beach getaway packages from the city are now no longer good Monday to Friday. And seniors who’ve given up their cars are high and dry. And out-of-school teenagers without licenses can’t get there to play or even to work.

State Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey has smartly made it a priority to help New Yorkers who don’t drive get to their state parks.

Make it happen. Restore the Jones Beach bus.
