EWING TABS ORR AS ASSISTANT

Nearly three months after he was introduced as Georgetown’s new basketball coach, Patrick Ewing has a staff of assistants and recruiters: Louis Orr, Robert Kirby and Akbar Waheed.

Orr was the head coach at Bowling Green from 2007-14, at Seton Hall from 2001-06 and at Siena in 2000-01. He and Ewing were NBA teammates with the Knicks.

Kirby returns to Georgetown, where he worked for John Thompson III from 2010-12. He was at LSU last season and has more than 30 years of experience as an assistant in Division I. Waheed was kept on Georgetown’s staff by Ewing after originally arriving as an assistant under Thompson last year. Thompson was fired in March after 13 seasons, one Final Four appearance, and just one trip to the Big Dance in the past four years.

CHAVEZ BROTHER MURDERED

The brother of legendary boxer Julio Cesar Chavez was killed in his home in the western Mexico town of Culiacan, state authorities said Monday.

Sinaloa state prosecutor Juan Jose Rios said in a news conference that two men entered the rear of Rafael Chavez Gonzalez’s house in Culiacan on Sunday night. One was armed and demanded money.

Some amount of money was handed over, but they demanded more, Rios said. When Chavez resisted, he was shot.

Another brother, Roberto Chavez Gonzalez, confirmed that account Monday and said his brother was shot in front of his family.

NATS FLIRT WITH K-ROD

Dusty Baker would love for his Nationals to add reliever Francisco Rodriguez — so long as K-Rod can replicate the form that made him a six-time All-Star.

Amid reports Monday that the Nationals have signed the veteran right-hander to a minor-league deal, Baker said only that he had taken “calls from various people” about him and that nothing was official.

l Indians manager Terry Francona left Cleveland's 15-9 victory over the Rangers because he wasn't feeling well. He was evaluated and checked out “fine,” the team said, but he did not return to the game.

GATORS TAKE EDGE

Brady Singer struck out a career-high 12 in seven innings, Jonathan India doubled in two runs, and Florida beat LSU, 4-3, in Game 1 of the College World Series finals in Omaha. The Gators (51-19) need a win tonight or Wednesday to earn their first national championship in baseball.
