Kin of model killed by bus OK $500G settlement

THE FAMILY of a Swedish fashion model who was killed by a Roosevelt Island bus while riding her bike has agreed to a $500,000 settlement to end a lawsuit over her death, records show.

Ana Maria Mostrom, 29, was left brain-dead on Oct. 8, 2014, after a Roosevelt Island Operating Corp. bus hit her as she pedaled along Main St. on the island.

Bus driver Edward Buggs Jr. was turning left when he hit Mostrom at 9:18 p.m. He stayed at the scene and was not charged.

The catwalker died less than a week later at New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell as family and friends held vigil, hoping for a miracle recovery.

At the time of her death, Mostrom lived on Roosevelt Island and worked for some of the fashion world’s biggest designers, including Oscar de la Renta. She had also been a contestant on a Scandinavian version of “Top Model” in 2005.

In 2015, Mostrom’s family sued Buggs and the corporation, a state-run entity that oversees the maintenance and management of the Roosevelt service.

The model’s family accused the defendants of negligence. The corporation runs the Red Bus Service, which circles the island.

Papers filed June 22 in Manhattan Surrogate’s Court show Mostrom’s parents reached the $500,000 settlement through mediation. Island A Surrogate’s Court judge must sign off on the settlement.

A spokeswoman for Roosevelt Island Operating Corp. declined to comment on the settlement.

She said that her agency no longer employed Buggs.

A lawyer for Mostrom’s family did not respond to a request for comment.

As the model hovered between life and death, her friend Timothy Phillips wrote movingly on Facebook about her effect on others.

“Her family and many of her friends are gathered here with her now and the staff of the hospital say that they have never witnessed such an outpouring of love and affection for anyone before,” he wrote.

“The light within her is fading but her star shines brighter than ever.”
