Good News is: Weekday bus to beach back

- BY LARRY McSHANE

HERE’S ONE LESS thing to drive you crazy this summer: The bus to Jones Beach is resuming full service.

The popular mass transit option will start weekday service again on Thursday — thanks to $200,000 in state funding and a little prodding from the Daily News.

Without the money, all Monday-to-Friday visitors to Jones Beach would need cars to enjoy the sun and surf.

“Jones Beach State Park is a premier summer destination, and public transportation helps thousands of New Yorkers and visitors alike to access this Long Island treasure," Gov. Cuomo said Tuesday in restoring the service.

The Nassau Inter-County Express bus service to Jones Beach was initially eliminated on weekdays, forcing an estimated 16,000 visitors to rely on cars — or stay home.

This created issues for senior citizens without vehicles, kids too young to drive, and people looking to use the Long Island Rail Road’s beach getaway package.

In years past, the service shifted from weekends-only to seven days a week at the end of June. This year, they planned to scrap the weekday route.

But Cuomo, after an editorial in The News last week, restored the weekday service on the 19-minute route from the LIRR station in Freeport, L.I., to the beach.

“Make it happen,” the editorial read. “Restore the Jones Beach bus.”

The cost of a round-trip ticket will be $5.50.

The move was hailed by local officials as a boon for tourism and beach traffic.

“By restoring access to Jones Beach, more visitors will be able to experience our beautiful beach and help drive the local economy,” said Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano.

State Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey was on board.

“The NICE service provides yet another option for visitors to get out and experience the wonderful transformation and new opportunities at Jones Beach State Park thanks to Governor Cuomo,” Harvey said.
