Benintendi powers 6th straight
ARLINGTON, Texas — Andrew Benintendi went 5 for 5 with two homers, six RBI and a terrific catch in left field, and David Price (4-2) struck out nine over six scoreless innings as the Red Sox stretched the longest winning streak in the majors to six games with an 11-4 victory over the Rangers on Tuesday night.
The first Red Sox rookie with two five-hit games in a season, Benintendi had a three-run homer in the fifth that chased Yu Darvish (6-7), who matched career highs by allowing seven runs and 11 hits.
PADRES 1, INDIANS 0: Cory Spangenberg drove in the only run with a groundout, and six pitchers combined on a five-hitter for visiting San Diego. Cleveland manager Terry Francona missed the game after he was admitted to the Cleveland Clinic for tests. Francona, 58, was hospitalized twice last month after feeling lightheaded and having a rapid heart rate. Bench coach Brad Mills ran the team.
ASTROS 16, BRAVES 4: Jose Altuve homered and drove in four runs and Josh Reddick hit a grand slam for visiting Houston. The Astros improve to 30-9 on the road and overshadowed the return of Braves slugger Freddie Freeman, who went 1-for-4 and played third base.
ROYALS 7, M’S 3: Whit Merrifield hit the first pitch of the game from Felix Hernandez (3-3) for his seventh home run and Mike Moustakas added his 24th homer as visiting Kansas City won for the fifth time in six games.
TIGERS 5, GIANTS 3: Victor Martinez homered, Michael Fulmer (8-6) pitched eight innings and host Detroit snapped San Francisco’s sixgame win streak. Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera left after six innings due to left hip tightness.
RAYS 6, CUBS 5: Tim Beckham homered as visiting Tampa Bay won its reunion with Joe Maddon. Beckham’s two-run drive highlighted a five-run fourth against Jon Lester (5-5).
MARLINS 5, CARDS 2: Christian Yelich hit a three-run homer to lead visiting Miami.
BREWERS 6 ORIOLES 2: Eric Thames hit a pair of home runs and Jimmy Nelson pitched seven strong innings to lead host Milwaukee.
TWINS 5, ANGELS 4: Kyle Gibson pitched into the seventh to snap his three-game winless streak for host Minnesota.
PIRATES 3, PHILLIES 0: Andrew McCutchen hit a pair of solo homers for visiting Pittsburgh.
A’S 7, WHITE SOX 6: Franklin Barreto homered in the ninth and Yonder Alonso went deep twice as host Oakland snapped a season-high six-game losing streak.
REDS 8, ROCKIES 1: Homer Bailey went six solid innings for his first win since Aug. 12 for visiting Cincinnati.
DODGERS 4, D’BACKS 3: In Los Angeles, Clayton Kershaw carried a nohitter into the seventh inning and struck out 11 to become the first 13-game winner in the majors this season.
Kershaw (13-2) ended up allowing two hits in seven innings. He lost his bid for a second career no-hitter on an infield single by Chris Owings.
