TRUMP TO FRENCH FIRST LADY: ‘YOU’RE IN SUCH GOOD SHAPE’
PRESIDENT TRUMP decided to shake things up on his trip to France, this time initiating awkward exchanges with the country’s first lady rather than her husband, Emmanuel Macron.
Video posted on the French government’s official Facebook page showed Trump, Macron and their wives chatting after a tour of the museums at Les Invalides.
As they were saying their goodbyes, Trump turned to Brigitte Macron and gestured toward her body. “You know, you’re in such good shape,” he said, before repeating the observation to her husband. “Beautiful,” he added, as the first lady appeared to move behind Trump’s wife, Melania.
Trump and the French first lady had an awkward hello as well.
He at first offered his hand to her, but at the last minute opted for a hug instead, the pair fumbling to grasp hands as they approached each other. They embraced before Trump tightly latched onto a couple of her fingers, waving her hand around and seemingly trying to pull her closer. His handshake with the French president was unremarkable — notable because in May, they shared a long and tense handshake during their first meeting in Brussels. Brigitte Macron was her husband’s former high school teacher, and she’s 24-years his senior — while Trump is 24 years older than his wife. Macron invited Trump to Paris for a Bastille Day celebration that’s also honoring the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entry into World War I. At a joint press conference, Trump noted “France is America’s first and oldest ally — a lot of people don’t know that.” He said he and Macron had discussed his decision to withdraw from the global accord on climate change, and would do so again in the future. The first couples later had a private dinner together at the Eiffel Tower. They ate a selection of pâté, Dover sole served with spinach and Hollandaise and filet of beef, souffléd potatoes and truffle sauce.
