A prayer for the failing subways
Toms River, N.J.: As a native New Yorker reading about subway problems, my heart goes out to all the people who must use the subway these days. Many years ago, while I was living on E. 68th St. in Manhattan and using the 68th St. station on Lexington Ave. to go downtown to work at a bank on Liberty St., the subways were always on time, no problems, no delays, no troubles. All for a nickel! I used the subway twice a day, to and fro. Those were the days, my friends. I can’t imagine the price people pay for the situation that exists today.
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John: Bless the subways people ride upon. Mary Foltin Brooklyn: I last took the subway in 1977 when I was 32. The system has been a horror show ever since the first section opened in 1904. Instead of spending billions of dollars “upgrading” the subway, it should be phased out before it totally fails or is flooded out. All future transportation should be above ground. Steve Smith
A beautiful, broken family
Jamaica: The daughter of slain Police Officer Miosotis Familia, Genesis Villella, called her mom “stunningly beautiful.” One of the thoughts that came into my head when I saw her picture on the cover of the July 6 Daily News was that she could have been a Miss World. Instead she chose to serve and help people. Too many guns are ending up in the wrong hands, with no end in sight. May God bless her family and give them the strength to carry on. Elbera Reid
A true public servant
Staten Island: Police Officer Miosotis Familia was by all accounts a loving mother and a friend to all who knew her as well as those who did not. She was a credit to the New York City Police Department. She had a line-of-duty injury and could have retired on three-quarters pay. She chose to stay and serve the city and its citizens whom she loved. Now she is in heaven looking over all of us. As for her assassin, God has taken care of him. He is in hell, where he belongs. Rest in peace, Officer Familia. Tom Lyons
Shield the cops
Hampton Bays, L.I.: How many cops will have to be murdered before the city will supply police officers’ vehicles with bulletproof glass? We all know it’s expensive. What price cops’ lives?

Opportunity knocked
Staten Island: I was not going to write about “FDNY aces test” (June 23) but then I saw a second article, “Random doom for Fire Dept. dreams” (June 26), about how the department doesn’t take men who want to be firefighters even though they scored a 98 on the written test. But yet they will give the job to women and minorities because of affirmative action. Where is the fairness?

Avella’s the one
Long Island City: First we had a mayor whose three terms enabled him to overbuild a city for the very rich. Then we have the present mayor going overboard for the homeless and very poor. With election time coming, I was deeply upset that Tony Avella, a candidate with a rare commitment to a disappearing middle class, has chosen not to run. Please, senator, change your mind. You have many besides me who believe this is your time. Through Voice of the People, Avella backers can convince him he’s a winner. Let’s hear from all of you who he never thought existed. Euclid Carras
Turkey’s haven
Bayside: It is very sad that in “What we owe our fellow human beings” (Op-Ed, June 28), Rabbi Ammiel Hirsch never mentions Turkey’s enormous help and contributions to the millions of refugees from Syria and Iraq in their darkest hour, providing a lifeline for their survival through Turkey to Europe. Turkey provided for 3 million refugees without delay and furnished them with all the necessities. One million chose to move on to Europe through Greece. Turkey showed compassion and humanity a great expense, and should be commended by all. Joey Murad
When baseball was baseball
Ridgewood: Mike Schmidt was 100% right (“Schmidt: Team stars need to speak English,” June 7). Not speaking English is not good. Major League Baseball players can afford a tutor or to go to night school. Remember: This is America. I’m 78 and have loved baseball since I was a little girl — I went to Ebbets Field on Saturday Ladies Day for 25 cents. Right now I’m so disgusted with baseball. Forget about reviewing plays, which holds up the game: Right or wrong, let the umpire make the call. That’s what they get paid for! Cut your hair and shave your beards. You look like werewolves. Ann Hampton
Let them just pitch
Bayside: In this season of neverending Mets injuries, pitcher Robert Gsellman has joined the disabled list. Hurt while running the bases, he should have instead been on the bench, awaiting his important pitching performance. Why does the National League not employ the designated hitter, as the American League does? Pitchers ought not to come to bat, as that is not their primary function. It is definitely time for a change. Sarah Alboher
Mighty off base
Trumbull, Conn.: How to become a guaranteed winner when it comes to sports betting: Read Mighty Quinn’s picks in the Daily News sports section. Whatever he bets, bet the opposite. You’d be ahead by over $1,000.

Noses out
Brooklyn: Minding your own business is a full-time job, but most people are part-time workers. We can’t do anything about the past, but we certainly can do something about the future. I call a person with a college education but with no common sense an educated moron. A la Donald Trump. Arthur Mazlin
No more of this
Great Neck, L.I.: It has become quite apparent that this country cannot put up with President Trump for another three and a half years. The time is coming very soon when the public will implore their representatives to impeach him for the good of Donald Trump and the country.

You too, McConnell
Scarsdale, N.Y.: Sen. Mitch McConnell has been in his position for over 30 years. He said Barack Obama would be a oneterm President. I say Trump will be a one-term President if he is not impeached, and hate-healthbill McConnell will be leaving with him at the next election.

Blaming the kids
Brooklyn: It’s laughable to believe that President Trump’s son and son-in-law met with a Russian lawyer a few months before the election to discuss the adoption of Russian children. Really? That’s the best lie they could come up with? Nancy D. Bennett
Tiffany gold
Great Neck, L.I.: I wonder why the White House doesn’t let Tiffany Trump play some kind of role. She’s so pretty, so young, and obviously very intelligent. She is embarking on a law degree in the fall. Moreover, her smile is so natural and real! I’m curious.

The eagle weeps
Wallingford, Conn.: On the evening of June 29, I was watching TV and someone held up a copy of the next day’s Daily News with the picture of a bald eagle with his head bent down. I started to cry, mostly because of what old No. 45 is doing to my beloved country. But I was glad I would be getting my copy of the Daily News the next day. But when I got it I was so disappointed when I saw that my copy was in black and white, and not in color. Why was that? I have requested a copy in color from the Daily News. I live in a nursing home and plan on hanging the picture up on the wall. Have you thought about making a better-quality copy to sell? Thank you for such a beautiful cover. Barbara Boucher
Redemption singer
Leesburg, Va.: The late, great Bob Marley once said: “Me don’ dip on the white man’s side nor on the black man’s side. Me dip on God’s side.” I feel sorry for you people who never saw Bob Marley and the Wailers live. Don Hutnick
